Have you tried slowly pulling all of the seat belt out and letting the retractor pull the belt back in? It gives the belt a clean rewind and you can see if there are any twists in the belt that are getting wound up.

yes it happens on both sides but the drivers side is worst.it dosent retract period unless i make it go back in.i'll try pulling it all the way out and see if that helps? can you still buy new seats belts? peace

The seatbelts on my 85 wouldn't retract either. I took them out and wound the springs tighter to help them retract. I wound the springs just tight enough to still be able to pull the seatbelt and lock/click it. Be very, very careful if you try this. This didn't fix the problem completely but they are much better. I also removed the plunger in the door jamb which has a cable connected to it. The cable runs to the seatbelt and is supposed to help the seatbelt retract when you open the door. As far as locking in a quick stop, my 85 had small weights that swing forward locking the seatbelt when the car comes to a quick stop.

my '86 vert had the same problem. Front and even more so the rear belts. Had an '85 cougar with the same problem. I now have a '98 escort... and guess what? Must be a Ford thing. Solved the problem in the stang with a 5 point Deist harness

It's not just Foxes, in my experience it's every car from the '80s that's got those seat belt retractors that to their thing when you open the door. Lots of GM cars I've come across have the same problem. Just be glad you don't have motorized belts like my Tbird.

just sold my last set of front belts today john or i could have hooked you up for alot cheaper then $300. when i got those from the junkyard they didn't seem lazy. they did start getting a bit slow to retract though when those seats came in the picture. i think the angle it put the belts at was the straw that broke the camels back.

nevermind, just read the original post date of this.. someone did some digging to bring this back?
