I lost my keys to my stang.
The place i bought car from gave me two sets of keys but the sare doesnt have a chip so it wont turn the car on. I talk to a locksmith and they want to charge me 300 bucks to replace the key.

Do i have any other options? i was looking on autozone and they want 80 bucks for a new cylinder and key but i dont know if i still would have to take it to the dealership to be programmed. anyone have suggestions?

find an off duty locksmith. i got an extra chipped key made for less than $50.

post up on craigslist to find one that will do it on the sdie.

the new cylinder will still have to be programmed so thats no help.

Having 1 key made is $50 more or less.
If you have lost both (all) keys, it costs much, much more to have them made. The dealer has to work with your VIN to get the correct code to work with your EEC.
As a warning, if you have or had 2 keys with chip and you ever lose 1, bend over right now and have the spare made or you will pay dearly later.

Now that you have 2 keys made pick up a 3rd at some point so you will always have at least 2 keys . You can program the third yourself so you wont have to pay $100 to get the key programmed if you ever lose one. Also you might get a valet key for $5 in case you lock your keys in the car , it will unlock the doors but not start the ignition and its cheap insurance.

great advice. a pats key is about $10 on ebay. lowes will cut it for free and you can program it yourself.

i always keep 3 keys for my cars

Today I lost my key ring in 20 plus inchs of snow while over my Mothers house digging her out. Naturally both my Mustang and Ranger keys are on it. Have spares for both but still need replacements.

Just called Ford and they said the key is $28, then they need to reprogram so it is reconized that is $45.Will get the Ranger done Monday, but will wait for all the snow to melt and hope I find them. I can get by with one Mustang key for the time being. Had to take a round trip taxi home then back to her house for $34 plus tip so a pricy loss.

All her neighbors are in their 80's so did not want them to drive me in the snow covered roads. Was really pissed off for about 30 seconds then figured if that's is all that wrong at this point in time I'm doing good.

theres a very easy way to get around the pats as long as you still have a 'non-pats' copy of an original key.
it will obviously crank while the pats light flashes but wont start.
you use a remote starter bypass thats wired to an acc lead to give it power whenever the key is turned forward.
normally the 'bypass' would be connected to the remote starter itself and powered only when youre utilizing the remote starter. it gives the pats the signal its looking for. allowing a remote starter to work.

I only got ONE key with my Cobra, the other day just for the hell of it I tried using it in the door lock. DOES NOT FIT. I also hate my life :(

Doesn't fit or just wont unlock the door ? Alot of times if the lock cylinder isn't used it will get gummed up and the key wont work. Ford sells a spray for that , cant remember the part number off the top of my head but I'm sure an auto parts store would be able to get some of the same stuff.:nice:
