I'm trying to find out how to go fast as cheap as possible??

Don't remember who here said this but it is a sad truth.

1) Cheap
2) Fast
3) Reliable

You only get to pick 2 of the above.

QFT!

It's from an old movie Mad Max I believe when he was talking to the garage attendant.

Honestly to go fast cheap, just find the lightest car possible and place the biggest engine you can afford into it that will fit. Most call these type of cars "skate boards"

Or as was stated earlier just find and buy someone else's money pit, this is very sound advice!

Good luck with your quest!

Will

like im talkin just about fast enough to beat a 2001 mustang gt auto stock. and that electronic shiftkit has a stage one and stage 2 it says stage one wil make my tranny last longer and just not to drive on stage 2 everyday? but i really like my car its cleann

Buying someone elses money pit is always the way to go. I have been on both sides of that deal. How many times have you seen a car for sale for 3000-4000 and the ad says he has 10000-12000 into it? Also, don't be afraid to buy GOOD used parts. More often than not, you can upgrade your parts and sell your old stuff and end up not much out of pocket. Sometimes you even end up ahead! Other than the shortblock, almost everything on my car is used. Just know what you want and how much it should cost. The guy going on and on about his money pit, he should have pulled the rip cord way sooner. As far as cheap and good upgrades, I would find some good used heads, or do the Gt-40 heads and Explorer intake and mild cam. If you do your own wrenching, this should not set you back too much. Just keep your eyes open for deals, and you will do alright.

Regarding Hankys posts, the fact is alot of us have 20K in our cars including the car price and yeah buying a termi or similar would be the same price and alot better car. However, I think the vast majority of us who have cars like ours didn't and quite frankly couldn't spend 20-25K all at once, but rather over years and years it was a building process.

hit the nail on the head for me. some of us our into building cars, not buying them already done up.

as far as the original poster goes, i would look into cobra take off parts, maybe you could find some heads and intake for cheap.

Ding. Exactly.

So did the OP wise up and buy an LS1 car yet or what?

Nickel and diming a car or 'building' it is stupid when you have to waste a ton of money just to start on an even playing field.

Finally sold my brothers H/C/I nitrous 94 cobra this past weekend. Drove a 00 M6 T/A last night with 3:73s and a muffler....... Would RAPE that cobra off the bottle ALL DAY. NTM you actually feel like you're in a sports car but that's besides the point.

Why not improve on something that's already fast? Seems the most $ efficient and logical idea to me. It's just as fun to be going 'fast' and get even faster WHILE you are modding and having fun.

Some people are not in it just for the FASTEST vehicle out of the factory.

Some people actually DO like mustangs and just simply want or always wanted one.

SOME people don't have a ton of money to begin with and like he asked originally wanted to know how he could go faster for cheap.

Now there is nothing wrong with being a Mustang enthusiast and wanting to know how to go faster for cheap.

We all know you suggest never dropping a dime in a mustang to have a fast car, however that isnt everyones goal to have the fastest car for the money spent.

He just wants a faster mustang than his current setup and didn't know what to do with little money.

I guess its hard for hanky to understand that we all dont have 20K to buy a play car. It's not that hard of a concept. I just posted this a few posts back and I will say it again. Read slower I guess. Call it nickel and diming or whatever it is you want to call it, but most of us here bought our cars because thats what we could afford and if not it was because of the love of the body style. I love when people get so angry about our cars and say oh this other car is so much better. Ok...umm...cool? Go buy one then. :neat:

Exactly my point!

It is likely that the guy bought the car like it is with gears and cai for around 2500-3000 and it was affordable but now he wants to see what he can do to "improve" it for the best bang for the buck.

It takes YEARS for most people to take a stock car to the quality of a good h/c/i for alot of young guys that mommy and daddy dont have money to buy these things.

I am the first person to say that I came from a poor family but I have ALWAYS been a mustang enthusiast and knew one day i would get one.

My car is almost bone stock and its taking a while to get it anywhere because i have a wife and 2 kids that come first.

I also like hearing go fast mod's for cheap because they DO spark my interest.

Sure i would love to have a 11 second street car, but right now its not do-able and i will stick to my car and do the cheap mods to improve it Slowly.

Yes one day I will look back at receipts and probably be amazed at how much i spent OVER THE YEARS compared to what it takes to buy one of these 11 sec monster factory cars.

However i don't have the money to go buy one or finance one of these things.

Call it what you want but im just a average joe that likes muscle cars and appreciates doing it myself wether or not it takes 5 yrs to accomplish something or not I at least know i made that beast rather than saying I bought that beast!

Hahahahaa I just like stirring the pot against the one siders.

The difference is I've had both (well technically my brother owned the LS1 variant and I had an LT1 for awhile). You can grab LS cars all day for 5-7k. The last 99z28 at my house was $4800. Car ran damn near 12s @ 108 consistantly and it was next to stock. I just love the illustration of what you CAN attain for your 20k or whatever. You says you can't tinker one part at a time with a cheaper (5-7k) car. That is NOT that expensive and you will surely have 2k into a 3-5k mustang just to cover the basics....while you try to break 100 in the quarter out of frustration.

5k Ls1 + $500 Nitrous = 11 sec car.

I know alot of highschool girls that always wanted a mustang too ;)
Yes, I must've lost to some mustangs to make me hate them and call them slow....that ALMOST makes sense....NOT. I trap like 115 half blown up (and would be sick with a fresh bottom end); I don't lose to many anythings on a good day. I just know what I've had to pay...out of my own pocket; to get there. I could spend half and do it n/a. Go look in the stang of the year thread and see my pictures of where I started. I am the definition of putting a car together over 4yrs.

I guess I just like to see you guys get all riled up. It's the slow guys that take it so serious and get mad. I'm not mad. The guys who've spent the money and time on their rides aren't mad; they know what it's taken to get there and the financial options they've sacrificed to do it.

Don't worry; you won't be the fastest person in the world with a stock LS1 car. Just faster than 90% of all h/c/i only non gutted sn95s ever....unless you buy an auto vert lol. ;) :D

Lighten up!!!

And don't make me LS1 swap this 88 GT fox I rebuilt and post pictures...cause I still might :)

Do it! I'd love to see how it turns out.

And I am not all riled up I just don't want people to get discouraged from doing what they have wanted to do for years.

People learn from their mistakes and its called life lessons. I will stick with my 95 Stang and see where my financial situation leads me. I actually like the reliability it has given me over the past year. Made about 5 trips back and forth from St.Louis to California. With no problems.

I personally LOVE the body style and think it has GREAT potential to be what i have always wanted it to become.

No one is mad but you Hanky. You get angry over what other people do with their cars. I would assume most people on this board are smart enough to know how much an LS car can be had for, but PREFER Mustangs regardless of the lower stock performance. That was me at least. Don't get me wrong, if I could have afforded a termi I certainly would have got one, but I am also not one of those people that thinks its cool to take a big old loan out for a play car. Don't take all this the wrong way as I have always thought you were a good guy and valued you as a poster here, but it just seems like you have been mad about alot the last couple weeks.

If the question was "what is the fastest car I can buy for 5K" hankygt would have some good points in that building on the highest hp platform you could get makes the most sense. But that was not the question. The man wanted to know what to do with HIS car. If that was all that mattered, we would all be driving the same thing. What kind of fun would that be? We all have different tastes and different ideas about what we want in a car. If you are going to worry about throwing money down a hole, then you probably better stay away from this hobby, whether it is a Mustang, LS1, import, or whatever. The bottom line is, are you having fun? When you start saying no, then it is time to go buy an hybrid electric car or a bicycle. There will always be someone faster, sometimes because they spent a fortune and sometimes because they found a good deal. Don't worry about it, just go have fun!...... Now if I had 20K to throw around, I would go out a Factory Five cobra kit car, throw my motor and tranny in it, and smoke everything:D

hanky its cool bro, i like stirring the pot as well. thats why i made my comment, but i do agree with you, LS1's are just sick. if i was building a fast straight line car, i would definately choose a camaro over a mustang anyday. but the reason i chose the stang as my weapon of choice was 3 reasons, 1, it was what i could afford. 2. i like the look over a camaro/firebird. 3. i love the way they sound, i havent heard a camaro yet that sounds as good as a mustang.

but your right, dollar for dollar and LS1 engine is the cheaper way to go fast
