I found a beautiful 1991 5.0 vert today. Nice red car with some tastefull upgrades and a new top. Only problem is that the guy bought it from a soldier and hasnt been able to get the title for it in the last two years. No way to track the seller down. Honestly concidering trying to buy a junker with a good title to make this happen, just do not know the legal angle on it. Anyone with helpful input? Anyone know a way to get this thing titled?

Just about every state is different, so you will have to talk to your DMV and see what their procedure is. Did the current "owner" get a bill of sale or any documentation? If so, then stykthyn is probably right, he will need to transfer it to his name and then he could sell it to you. Some states have a bonded title process that can be used, but it does cost more for the bonding insurance and fees.

Just google lost title in your state and find out the options you have. Or go to your DMV website and look for the lost title/ no title procedures.

many areas have abondoned vehicle laws where if you can prove it has been on your property for such an amount of time you can legally claim it.

If all else fails, and you trust a repair shop they can put a judgement against the car and get a title. If not you could buy the Mustang and use all the good parts on a 4 banger body, I would get the vin # first and run it

I just received another email from the current owner. I guess he has tracked the gentlemen down that sold it to him. Still no luck on the title, but from what he is saying it was last titled in VA. Honestly, it would be an absolute shame to pull this one apart, so I am looking into the VA rules on lost title. Definitely a thought on the abandoned vehicle angle and worth looking into. Only positive is that the original seller was actually a Marine, may help in the future.

+1 It's called a mechanics lien. We do them all the time at the tow yard. Takes about 30 days for a local car. And about 60 for out-of-state cars. Cost is around $40. You just need to google auto lien and find a company that will do it for you, there are plenty. The only thing is that if it's stolen or there's already a lien holder (like a bank) they will be notified of the lien and can claim the vehicle which could leave you holding the bag on anything you've spent on it (purchase and lien fees).

A lien title is like a temporary title, which you would take to the DMV to register it in your name.

all you need to do is get a title bond look it up for the state you live in the sheriff will come and run the vin to check if it is stolen and sign your paperwork. you bring that paperwork and the title bond to the dmv and they will issue you a title :nice:
