Hey guys I bought a 08 GT new and on a cold day when the car hasn't been driven it will grind into third. Every other gear will shift just fine, it's done it since new, I should have taken it back a long time ago. It will shift fine into third after I've driven a couple of blocks and it never does it when the car is warmed up or in summer time. I called the dealer and they said if it's something that there is no way I could have broken they would fix it. But if it's a clutch then they won't.

Does anyone elses car do this? Anyone have any ideas? I just don't want to get screwed by the dealer is all.

Thanks for any help.

Is it ANY time you shift into it? Or just high RPMs, or what? My mom's 05 v6 grinds reverse on cold startups, without fail. Only does it when the car's really cold though. My 5.0, the T5 will grind 2nd at high RPMs if I don't let the car warm up a good amount before running it hard.

It only does it when it's cold outside like in winter and during the first few blocks I drive it then it shifts fine. I'm planning on taking it back into the dealer soon, but I want to know as much as I can about the problem. Do you know anything else Sparta? What are blocker rings? Would the fluid really cause this?

Thanks for the help guys.

Google Ford Technical Service Bulletin TSB-09-9-6. This addresses these issues with the Tremec 3650 tranny. I know of several people who have had this fix done by their dealer or had the whole transmission replaced with one that had updated parts installed. :D

My 08 started doing the same thing last month. The first time in the mornings I shift into third, it grinds. It won't do it again until the next morning. I have not taken it into the dealership yet. I need to get all the burnt rubber out of the rear wheel wells to avoid their drama regarding abuse from racing.

I took mine in a couple of days ago and they are looking at it right now. I'm going to go check up on it tomorrow. I'll let you guys know whats going on so you know what to expect when you take yours in.

I went in today to check up on my car and they had started to do the TSB on it about the tranny grinding into 3rd. Then my car sometimes howls when you first start it and they said their was another TSB for that and they are going to fix it. I'm glad this all worked out, thanks for the help guys.

I should be getting it back in the next couple of days, I miss my car haha. I've heard people say in the forum that you should just stick with ATF instead of putting any kind of synthetic in the tranny. Was it hard to shift before the Royal Purple? If it was I'd try changing back. I've also heard these trannys are like that sometimes though.

I have an 08 GT with 15000 miles. I had this problem since new. Trans never felt just right. When the weather got cold this fall stated grinding on the first shifts of the day. Called the dealer, told the service manager about the problem and the TSB. Dropped the car off Sunday night, picked the car up the next Saturday with brand new transmission, wow what a difference. This is warrantee work if you are still in the warrantee period. Don't wait just get it fixed.::D:D:D:

So I am curious...

Is this a major CRUNCH when going into gear? Or just the sound of a few teeth meshing together? My '07 (when cold) will sometimes make some sound going into 2nd and 3rd but I don't consider it a massive grinding sound.

My car has 45K miles on it...and I assume this would fall under the 5/50K drivetrain warranty if I take it in?

Mine sounded like if I didn't have the clutch in all the way and grinded into the gear. If felt fine, but I could hear a grinding sound like I missed a gear when I would shift. It only did it in the winter time for a couple of blocks then after that it wouldn't do it anymore and it only would do it in 3rd. If it was really cold it was hard to shift, even if I was sitting still with the clutch in just running through the gears.

Take it in and see what they say.

I'm going to try to get this TSB done on my car because it's done this since new but it's got progressively worse as time has gone on..
