GT40P Heads

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HI, Wondering if these heads are worth $300 ? These heads came off an 1996 ford explorer. The heads have a gt40p stamped on the inside. Casting number on the bottom of the heads is F77E. These heads have been vatted, steel blasted, magnafluxed, and pressure tested. Also have 3-angle valve job, new valve stem seals, and have been milled. I can purchase them for that but was wondering if they would work for me. I know that I would be limited on what headers that I could use..Would I be better off with long tube headers or the shorty ones ?
I plan on getting roller rockers..1.6 or 1.7 ??? Not sure on which to get.. A new GT40 Intake, upper and lower, Underdrive pullies, CAI, Will use stock injectors for now. I have an automatic trans and will probably go with 4.10 gears. What other upgrades would be a good match for what I have listed..? I really would like a good street car with an occassional trip to the dragstrip and not be laughed at...Not really concerned about fuel mileage as it will only be used for short trips back and forth to work..
Thanx for any input that you might have..

Definately a good head for a mild street car, and they sound like they had some care taken with them. Your biggest downfall after the mods planned will be the stock AOD, assuming thats what you have. The 4.10s will help, but with the gearing in them and the sloppy shifting, you might not be thrilled with your track numbers. I would ask some AOD gurus what the best things to do to them are...

My .02

Brian has good info....I'd go with a 3.73 though. My 91 GT long ago...had GT40 stuff, cam, intake, headers, 4.10's and an AOD. I HATED that car. It shifted too fast. 2nd gear sometimes would get skipped because it's spin through first, half of 2nd then boom....**** to 3rd at 4,700.

I'd invest in a good built AOD, shift kit, valve body, something to get it to shift at 5800-6000. My car pulled to 6,000, but every car is different. The AOD shuffle (1-2-1 shift) was the only thing that made it fast.

for the work thats into them it seems like a good deal. It would probly cost you more than that just to have a shop do the work, nevermind the price of the heads. Check the valve springs while the heads are off and make sure those arent junk, or just throw some new ones on, figure out a decent cam and GO MAN GO.

Thanx, I bought the GT40P heads today :)
I'm curious what the AOD shuffle is ?? I'll have to start looking for a shift kit.. I would like to get the Intake setup next then a Cam.. Possibly look into the 3.73's ???

We are guessing you are using these on a 302? If they really have that work done to them then yes they are worth 300 and picking them up would be a good deal. You will notice a great difference going to gt40p's over the stock heads, and the smaller combustion chamber will raise your compression a little. I would pick up the FRPP gt40p headers. The only thing I would be concerned with is the springs. Make sure the springs have been upgraded because the stock gt40p springs aren't even strong enough to handle the stock mustang HO 5.0 cam. The stock rockers will swap right over, if you want to use 1.7 rockers it will depend on what kind of cam you are using. If you are using the stock cam you can use 1.7 rockers and get a little more lift out of the stock cam.

HI, Yes it is a stock 302 at the moment. What's the best place to pick up the FRPP GT40P headers and what do they run for a price? Probably will do a cam(Comp Cams XE270-12 cam) when putting on the heads and intake setup.. I'll have to look into better springs for the heads then ?? Any ideas? Thanx, Tom

This cam was a recommendation for this setup. I'll have to do a search and find out the specs on it.

Are the springs stock? I find it odd that that sort of work was done to them and the springs weren't changed.

Trick Flow makes a good spring kit for those heads.

I agree, with that kind of work done to it, it looks like they were being prepared to be put on a mustang. I doubt the springs havent been changed, but its worth checking.

I'm looking into replacing the stock springs which are on the GT40P heads I bought. Any suggestions? Part #'s and price ?? I saw some listed by trick flow part# TFS-31400413.. Also looking into getting a mild cam setupo for it.. Trick Flow part# TFS-51402001.. Should I buy roller lifters and roller rockers also? What ratio roller rockers ? I'm really new at this and appreciate the advice..:)

Well,
I bought 1.7 Roller rockers.. Should I stay with the stock cam or put a beefier cam in it.?? I'l plan on installing better springs when the swap is done...

you can get good springs for those heads from thumper460 he sells them on his site i think its thumperoforangepark.com i no they are drop in springs and account for the diffrent size tips that the intake and exhaust valve have
