My buddy has a bone stock '06 GT five speed and he's wanting a good sounding set of axle backs. He's not wanting to do full exhaust, due to budget, because he also wants to buy a CAI/tuner and a short throw. We looked at some youtube clips and we liked JBA's the best, but he'd like some recommendations.

Thanks for any input.

His best bet would be to listen to other axlebacks in person. While youtube can give you an idea, it's not that reliable of a source. Is your friend looking form something slighty louder than stock or a lot louder? Looking for a deep tone? Does he mind having any drone or resonance?
Listening to clips you like JBAs the best. I had them before. No complaints. Nice smooth mellow tone, little to no drone and they sound awesome at WOT. A lot of people I know have them. Maybe because I live near JBA.

I have JBA on my car and they are ok. They are quiet though, my car isn't any louder then stock really. They have a good tone once you start to get on it though, but cruising around with them I'm a little disappointed.

I have Boom Tubes and an Off Road H. It's a little on the loud side at times, but nothing to worry about. Sounds good inside car, but I still like my Fox Body Mustang sound better. Not sure about outside the car...

I currently have SLP Loudmouths and they are great! You can tell they are NOT stock, even at idle. They sound better than the Flowmasters I had previously. I don't notice any drone and the exhaust tips look great.

I'm surprised they say the JBA's are the loudest. My car is not any louder then stock, and at idle it sounds about the same. It only sounds different when you're accelerating.

Stainless Steel Systems Terminator. Sound good and the polished 304 stainless looks great.

I have a very similar system, mine is from Nxt Step Performance. They primarily cater to the Corvette crowd and have been around awhile. MBRP has a very, very similar system. All T-304 stainless and all polished. I saw a guy on my local craigslist with new MBRP's for less than $200. I paid alot less than that but I was one of the first to try the Nxt Step product so I got a deal. All these are copies of the stinger or canister style mufflers. Straight through design with some packing and no baffling inside other than the perforated metal tube that runs through. I really like mine, sounds great at idle and over 3,000 rpm it roars. Some drone at 2,000 rpm and 70 mph but not bad. Alot less drone than the Pypes on my wife's car.

It is very disappointing how online videos sound... imho it distorts sound completely on most.
I've got Borla Stingers and i just love them. It gives rich and noble sound to the exhaust tone.
They r loudest in the car just below 2000rpm, which happens to be around 65mph in 5th.
Also cat-back was a b*tch to instal, not that it's hard, but it just didn't align right, but that's a cat-back.
Some say that FRPP ones are exactly the same as Borla Stingers (cause they r made by borla, just stamped ford) and that cat-back has no difference from axle-back, but that's for you to find out.

As many ppl said, hear all choices in person, that's the best way.

Ill give a vote for loudmouths. I have them on my car and love them, they sounded mean even with my stock h-pipe. But sound even better with my catted X. +1 Loudmouths

SLP LM + X-pipe. I have not heard that combo in person. I have seen a vid where someone compared both the SLP LM with H and SLP LM with X. Both set-ups sounded good, but I think the H pipe made it sound a little better.
