3.73 Gears. Too much?

sounds like a good choice i can't wait to put my 3.55's on. im rolling down the road with a stock T5, and 4.30's. it is pretty much my daily driver and i tell you what. i wish i had 5L5's 3.73. can not wait til i can afford the rebuild kit/traklok/mechanic time to do the switch

I have two mustangs, both are 5spd's. my 91 notch has 3.55's & they are ok but I would rather have 3.27's in it for the hwy & 1st is kinda short in town . my 95 vert had 3.90's in it & I hated it, I took off in second alot because 1st was worthless. I just put 3.27's in it but haven't been able to drive it yet.
IMO, it really depends on how much power you have & how much you like to shift. 3.27's are the best all around street gear for my driving habits. I never go to the track so I don't know what is best there but I would still tend to lean towards the idea that it would depend on the hp/tq, trans, tire size ect.... so I don't think there is one perfect gear. just my .02.

Typically, the difference between 3.55 and 3.73 gears at 70 mph in 5th gear is about 100 rpm. You have only a .18 difference between the two gears. If you drive a lot at 70 mph then 3.55 gears. If you want a bit more performance and mostly city driving then 3.73 gears. FWIW

Do the gear change. The stock gears suck and it's one of the best bang for the buck mods. It wakes these cars up. when I had my stock T5 I did notice that 1st was short and the rpms picked with the stock geared T5 but totally worth it and streetable. the tranny blew and I picked up a super high alloy from Astro with the taller gear set (2.95 1st &.63 5th) and it basically changed the gearing for the better. still pulls nice but 1st isn't so short anymore and it dropped the rpms a little and I don't have to shift has much. win, win !

i appreciate the information. BlueReefHatch, that rpm calculator was very useful. thank you. after playing around with tire sizes and putting the gear ratios in for my transmition, i have decided that 3.55 will be my gear of choice :nice: based souly on highway speed. i plan on doing a lot of long road trips this summer.. 3.55 with my tire size at 70mph will have me growling down the highway at a reasonable 2,206 rpm's

what exhaust do you have? 2,200 rpm's is a perfect spot for the flow/dronemasters:notnice: not sure what causes the drone but I had a o/r x-pipe with 40 series flows w/tailpipes & cruising @ 2,100-2,500 rpm's was a major pita.

Yea, Flowmaster drone is the worst at just over 2K rpm.

i have equal length bassanni's and matching cat x-pipe with a flows cat back. and at around 2100-2200 it has that drone and it does get to me in a long drive. glad this is just a toy to play with and not a dd.

also im glad to read threads like this one. i been trying to decide what gears to get 3.73-4.10. and i believe now im going to go with the 3.73's.
thanks for everyones input.

I live in Indy, so I'm on the highway running 60-70mph all the time. I have 3.73s, and IMHO, I wish I had a little more gear in OD. They aren't terrible, but it's a liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittle too much for highway cruising. Just a little. I've never driven a 3.55 car, so I can't say if that would be much better. I have, however, driven and ridden in 4.10 cars, and I think you 4.10 guys are nuts. 4.10s should be reserved for the drag strip.

The 3.73s are good for accelerating, though. 1st isn't bad on a decent set of tires.

I think, in the future when my car is making 400+ rwhp and I make the switch to 31 spline axles, I'll probably make the move to 3.55s or 3.27s. I actually wouldn't mind only using 3 gears in the 1/4 instead of 4...

4.10's are perfect for a modded 5.0, hell im going to put 4.30's in my 98, has 4.10's now and at 70mph its at 2500rpm, thats not too much at all, 1st isnt useless with a good tire (dr) and it feels like a jet pulling.. i really would like to try a 4.56 sometime..

i would get 22-24mpg in my 89 lx with a tremec and 4.10's everyday i drove it.

Funny i was reading a '92 Super Fords mag last night and they were talking about best bang for your buck mods, and gears was their #1 pick but they said they DO NOT recommend 3.73s for anything but a slick drag car

Oh how times have changed.

I went from the factory 2.73's to 3.55's 15 years ago on my 87 notch and am 100% as happy today with the 3.55's as i was back then. In normal street driving with my 3.35 first geared T5, I have never felt the need for more rear gear than than what is now there.

Well now I can't decide what I'll go with - 3.55 or 3.73. I actually like my 3.08s, but I wish I had more from a kick in 3rd and 4th.

I put 3.27's in my 5 speed last year and they are great (went from 2.73's). However, I always wonder what the 3.55's would have felt like. If I had put 3.55's in the car, I would probably be writing about how I would always be wondering what 3.73's would have felt like. No matter what you go with you are always going to wonder...what if? I don't know your driving habbits, but if you like your 3.08's then I would go with 3.55's. They are a good all around gear.

In my stang with a 5 spd I've had 3.27's, 3.73's, and 4.10's. IMO 3.73's were the best all around. Although with the 3.27's you could run the 1/4 in 3rd lol. 4.10's are fine around town but I got transferred at my job and went from a 4.6 mile drive to work to a 30 mile drive and they were a bit much for me @ freeway speeds (80+) :)
