I've got a 70 Maverick C4 that had a 6 cylinder bell housing on it. I want to install it into my 66 Mustang with a 289 engine. I haven't pulled the 66 C4 tranny out yet so that I can still drive the car until I rebuild the 70 C4.

So, will the 66 289 C4 Bell housing, flexplate, etc. fit onto the 70 C4 Trans? I know that the 66 converter won't fit.

the bell housings should interchange for those years of transmissions, and since the flexplate fits the 289 there are no issues there. you should also be able to use the six cylinder torque converter as well behind the 289, just remove the starter ring rear. that way you get a higher stall speed converter on the cheap.

Interesting....I did not know that either. The 6 cyl converter starter ring is spot welded in place. I guess just grind those spots off.

Would you happen to know what the stall is on that?

thanks for the help.....

yep, just grind the spot welds off and smooth everything down.

as for the added stall speed, you should pick up about 300-400 rpm more than the stock 289 converter, so figure about 1800 rpm stall speed with the six cylinder converter as opposed to about 1500 rpm with the V8 converter.
