Will a car handle good around turns with drag radials?

I had 245/45 17 Nitto 555s up front and 275/40 Nitto 555 Drag Radials on the back of my 69 Cougar for a couple of years when it was a daily driver. They handled fine by my standards even though the car in question was far from a corner carver to begin with. I never had issues with it getting jiggly or weird on me at all. The downside is that the DR's wore out much faster than the standard tires did and when they started to get bald, they lost traction FAST. Once they are bald, they are worthless.

I replaced them with the same size non DR tires, and they are much better wearing, and stiffer than the DRs were. Handling is better, but I would have no problem daily driving the Nitto 555 Drag Radials again. I ran then rain, shine, hot, cold, short trip, long trip, whatever and they did ok. Not ideal for corner carving but I doubt you are gonna slide into a light pole.

You want bad? My Cougar now has 165/80 15s up front and 255/60 Mickey Thompson ET Street Radials on it. Now THOSE are bad around corners :nice:

x2 on the crappy handling once their worn. I had them on my 95, and once they were worn, I had a real hard time keeping the rear-end from sliding out in turns on dry pavement. If it was wet, I had a hard time getting them to hook, turn, anything--actually kinda dangerous IMHO.

Great for drifting parking lots though!:D

New 555s and I'm a happy camper, even if it's raining.

honestly unless your driving like a douche bag nittos and BFG's are fine... i drove a stupid high torque light ass ended lightning with no sway bars around for a long time on short BFGs and the 305-45 nittos and never had issues. i drove my buddys mach 1 with bfg's and again unless your drving like a douche you wont have issues

Hmmm, so, since I said I had issues, does that mean I was "driving like a douche?"

And after all these years, I never knew...

Perhaps you could be a little clearer--just exactly how does one "drive like a douche"? I can honestly say I've never witnessed a douche driving, so I'm not sure exactly what the similarities would be between my driving style and that of a douche.

Perhaps you could provide a more constructive answer to the OP's question?

dont try to throw the thing through turns pullin 1 g... dont floor it from stops in the rain... drive like a normal person... like i said i drove my ass happy lightning around on nittos everyday and NEVER had an issue with them... rain or shine. i had more issues with my street tires i had on it when i sold it then i did on the nittos
