I have a tapping noise coming out of my engine. It is there %100 of the time but gets loud once the engine heats up and gets louder as the rpms increase.
I checked for loose plugs, loose chains, bad lifters, I thought maybe the head might be messed up so I swapped heads (had an extra set). There isnt any metal in the oil, the oil isnt low, there isnt an exhaust leak from the head-headers, there isnt anything that fell into my oil pan, its not a pulley hitting anything. I had a compression check done and there all the pistons read pretty much the same. Im stumped.
Im gonna take a video tomorrow and post it as well.

k i have had a 4.6 sohc in the past. i had the thing blow on me going down the highway. my problem was the timing chain guides. they wear out after a bit and the chain slaps ageist them. they are made of plastic and are held in by 2 10mm bolts, also there are chain tensioners that also go bad but the taping started off soft then grew louder over time i hated the block so i ran it to the ground. i would look there first if all else fails there is always the oil pump in the front but i doubt that's the problem. and worse case is it could be the piston slap or a internal problem. i will watch the vid when you put it up its really hard to diag a car when you cant see it lol.

Im trying to upload a vid but it wont let me upload vids off my phone. Im gonna try and get a video camera. If it is my chain guides couldnt I just take them out?

Chain tensioners?

When did the knocking start? Was it right after a WOT run? Has the oil level ever been low? More details, please. (Let's hope it is not rod knock but trinity_gt might be onto something.)
