did you take the distributor out?

Wondering if its the wrong gear, or wrong distributor, or wrong oil pump shaft.

If everything is correct. Find top dead center (TDC) of the #1 cylinder, then slide it down and wiggle the rotor until it seats completely. Where the rotor points will be the #1 plug wire.

You ought to through in a couple pics! I am the proud owner of a 1968 coupe :D Which is nlya shell at the present, originally a 200/C4 car.

Im assuming your 289 is the 200hp version? Which transmission? From what I have heard the little 289 was a very satisfying engine, everyone I know has loved them. Thought about building one for my car, but one day I may find a fastback and make a GT-350R clone :nice:

Once you get the distributor lined up properly, press down on the cap and bump the starter. The oil pump shaft is usually what does this, and when you bump the starter, it lines up and drops down all the way.
I would be concerned about tearing up the distributor gear and cam gear.

Manually moving the crank would be safer. Although it should slip in fairly easy.
