got a question about the license plate light lens'

When I bought my led license plate lights I bought new lenses since one of my old ones were cracked. I bought clear ones for a fox body with me thinking they would let out moer light since they arent half black. Now is there a reason why our cars have the half black lens and not the clear ones? Im really curious..

I would guess it's because it stops light from being seen from behind your car. I think if it was all clear and you were driving down the road the guy behind you would see the bulbs. Temp them up backward if you can an look at it at night.
