Having problems with my latest trans rebuild. Been gone through 3 or 4 times now, so I'm not a newbie at it, but it's been a while since I've last done it. My problem is when I torque the input shaft retainer down, and put the tailhousing on, the mainshaft gets in a bind, even without a shim for the input shaft. However, the input shaft has a small amount of play so it's out of spec. Also appears the output shaft isn't lining up with the back seal of the tailhousing (cocked straight up.) The shaft does not appear to run out of concentricity, however. I was curious if anyone has any ideas as I'm completely stumped as to what the problem could be.

In and out play??

So with no shim, you can't turn either shaft when you bolt it down?

Did you press the 3-4 synchro hub onto the mainshaft all the way??

2nd gear came apart was reason for the rebuild. I knocked the 3-4 synchro on a little further, and it's freed up but still no shim as of yet. Felt good though as far as endplay. Gonna try n see if I can possibly move it in a little further.

Alright, so the trans is almost assembled, but the tailhousing just will not take the final drive home. She stalls about a half inchish from being in position. Does anyone have any tricks? I've never had her put up this much of a fight before.

I've had them stop 1/2" out too. Make sure the 5th gear shift rod is in nuetral and aligned. As long as the bearing cup slides in all the way, that should be all that holds it on.

Whatever you do...don't use the bolts to "suck it home" Seat the tailhousing first.

Also, make sure the shift rod is lubed so it doesn't bind up in the tailhousing

Alright, 5th gear is in a bind in the shaft somehow. The linkage must not be in the right position. I assume I will have to pull the 5th gear synchro hub back off to get it out of a bind, as light force would not budge it.
