22 gallon fuel tank ????

I just read in a recent Mustang magazine that a 22 gallon fuel tank was available and sold by Virginia Classic for vintage Mustangs. It is a Scott Drake part.

Problem is I cannot find one anywhere...

Thats not the one. I read the article also and am looking to find a price on them.

The 22 gallon tank has been available since 1970. It's called a 1970 Mustang fuel tank. You must also use the 1970 fuel sending unit with it. With slight modification to your filler neck, it bolts right in.

I have no idea what mpg the 302 I am putting in the car will get.

1) All 1970 Mustangs had the 22 gal tank.

2) All 64-70 Mustangs had basically the same rear suspension.

3) You don't have to drive around all the time with the tank full, stopping for gas less often is the point of a big tank.

You can save a little weight and trunk space by using a 69 tank (20 gal). I haven't done this, but I have heard you have to bend the fill port back to make it line up with the fill neck. This can be done by using a piece of 2" pipe as a lever.

OT, but I'd do this if I could figure out how to put the gas cap in the trunk. I'm tired of pouring gas on the ground every time I fill up. Nozzles in CA don't work on 67/8 cars!!! Rant over.

The 22-gal tank was 1970 NON-California-emissions application. California cars in 1970 had the 20-gallon tank along with the evaporative emissions junk.

Not yet, but I was going to put the standard tank in before I get her on the road this summer. After reading the article I am pretty sure I will go the Stainless route.

It's not plating, it's solid stainless steel.

Once installed, it's hard to tell them apart. The 22 comes up level with the trunk floors, the 20 barely 1/2" lower.

Bad idea. It won't read gallons 16 though 22. Your gauge will always be "off". Way off. Get the right sender.

One of the Mustang magazines this month has an article on swapping a 22 gallon tank in. Just saw it a couple hours ago at Barnes and Noble, cant remember which magazine it was.
