Came from Texas to dc for a job and i sold my truck and got a 02 gt convertible....so ive been doing some researching on exhaust and such and have some questions. I want the deep throaty sound that Ive heard other mustangs have but dont know which one to choose, also if I do by a cat back do I need a h/x pipe then and there or can i just buy the cat back and worry bout the h/x pipe later on. Another thing is im ignorant when it comes to how this stuff works and can sumone explain to me where the h/x pipe connects to...thanks

if u get the catback that would be fine...i think ur better off just getting a set of mufflers and having them welded in instead...u wont notice a performance difference and ull still get the sound ur looking for. Then u can do the mid pipe at another time. the midpipe( h or x ) is what has the catalytic converters on it and connects the exhaust manifolds to the catback

I siggest reading this short article to gain a basic understanding of how the exhaust works....

Understanding Mustang Exhaust Systems

See if you like my exhaust:

I have MAC Flowpath mufflers welded into the stock catback and an MAC off-road H-pipe

(this is not my car but sounds just about identicle to mine)

can i get that same sound with just mufflers and no h pipe?

Your car comes stock with an H-pipe (it has one right now). The only problem is 4 catalytic converters that are on your stock H-pipe. I have an off-road H-pipe (so does the car in the video). Off-road H-pipes have NO catalytic converters on them, therefor the exhaust flows MUCH smoother and is MUCH louder.

You'll hear a significant difference with just swapping the mufflers out and leaving the stock H-pipe alone, for now. It wont sound like mine or the car in the vid, but it'll definitely sound a lot better than your stock mufflers.

I have the same setup, off road H and mac catback. I got the catback because my pipes looked like ****, otherwise I would have just went to a shop and got muffleres welded in.

I put on my off road H first(I received it like a week before my catback) and it gave it a little bit of sound not much, but when i put the catback on it really screams now. Just a catback, or weld ins wont give you the same sound as in the video.

heres on with a prochamber and mac catback, YouTube - 02 Mustang GT MAC prochamber and MAC cat back

heres one with a catted X and mac catback, YouTube - Mustang Mac Catback & UPR X-pipe

and then just the mac catback, YouTube - 2002 mustang gt mac catback

they all sound a little different, get what you like...go on youtube and search for Muctang exhaust, there are TONS of videos of different setups.

Screw that, Flowmaster or go home :D

If you have the coin, get the American Thunder cat-back. It's around $450. If not, you can buy a pair of Flowmaster mufflers for around $80 each. Whichever one you choose, take it/them to a shop and have it welded on for $60.

Unless you really care about performance, a cat-back is all you need. Whichever company you choose will sound nice over the stock system.

yeah if you want your mufflers to rust out, or sound like every other mustang.

OP- look at borla, magnaflow, or mac

Honestly I had Magnaflow on my previous Stang that was a brand new 02 GT. I put Magnaflow Magnapack system on (15673) and it's the nicest sounding system. Quite honestly if your going to spend the $'s on something get something decent that is stainless steel. Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with either Mac or flowmasters but I think the quality of Magnaflow or Borla is really top notch. Also both FLowmaster and Magnaflow are 30% off at Amazon.con by using the "MAGFLO30" code at the checkout. I just bought that same magnapack system for my 01GT I just got a few weeks ago for just $317.80. That is a SCREAMING awesome deal for Magnaflow products.

To each their own but that's my opinion.
