Rear End Lift

I tend to think that the raked stance is perty tough looking. I like it as long as its not too excessive.

That being said, if you used shackles to raise the rear end and then shimmed the axle to leaf spring mounts properly to correct pinion angle what would be the problem ? Besides of course if you hate the looks or the higher center of gravity....

tx65coupe  Why?

Even if they have close to max air pressure it is no differnt than regular shocks. The car still weights the same. Unless your mounts are rusted out it is no worse then your regular shocks.

Yeah, the car weighs the same, but now you are supporting hundreds of pounds of weight on the shock crossmember, which was not designed to support any weight at all. So, with say, 200 pounds of weight on the mount, now you hit a pothole, you just exceeded the carrying capacity of the mount by double or triple. These cars are tough, but after a while the crossmember disintegrates.

A lesser effect is it kills handling in the back end, by moving the support inward, creating a 'teeter-totter' effect. I'm not talking about 'high-speed competition' bad, I'm talking about 'not slamming into the old lady who just pulled out in front of you' bad.

The shackles change the leverage point of the spring mount. This tends to flatten the rear arch. That ruins any ride left. I checked it a long time ago and if memory serves this old man right, 3" of extra shackle equaled about 3/4" lift at the wheel well. Not much gain plus the spring is much softer so you still have the problem of hitting bumps and rubbing tires.

The way I have done it works real good. I just need to adjust the pinion angle on the current car pictured. Not sure how much it needs yet.

What, I have air shocks on my car with a 347/Vortech combo! How can they be bad? j/k I am looking for a good rear suspension to handle the power and fit a good size tire though...

Has anyone done a mini-tub on a fastback and still kept the rear seat?

Yeah, but it required a ton of cutting. I can now fit a 28X13.5 in my 66 coupe. I am going to try 29X14.5 (pretty sure it will fit. I moved the leafs inboard, moved the tubs to the frame and moved them up some, and then used 67 outer wells and stretched the quarters over them. I had to mod the seat frame a little, but compared to all the other crap I had to do that was cake. Just bought some steel dowel rods from Lowes, cut and bent it to fit, and welded. Put seat covers on, and they look good. I can tell where I trimmed it, but don't think you'll be able to really tell after it is all in there.

A ton of work was required, but much better than air shocks with tires hanging out. Still a ways from driving it, so we'll see how that goes.

What would everyone support then, if nobody likes the rear air shocks? Do you think the coilover is the best? Or what does everyone else have on their stangs. I have a pair of gas shocks on the back of my 65 stang, it your right, it is alot bouncy especially when your on windy roads, and makes you sick. But we also have original leaf springs, and rear sway bar. So what would be everyones best thing to do for a daily driven stang?

Using any type of shock that attempts to support the car will be bad on the upper shock mounts. I guess one could build up the upper mount area but then you still have the issues of handling with the air shock mount points for suspension.

There are plenty of types of new springs out there to get the level you desire. Once that is reached, then a good set of non air/non coil over rear shocks. To be right, you have to spend a small amount of cash.

Well, I never thought that '70's look would come back. I saw that movie a thousand times back then. Racy look, first made popular by Funny Cars. Most of us tried it, then in the 80's we got interested in handling. :)

Yep, lived the 60's look in school. Made it thru all the other styles too. Had the cars that handle sweet too. Now, I want one that is fun for me on the street and that is what this one is. It is really amazing on how many times people say they love the look. If I wanted a track car.....I would build it. Nice thing is...it's mine done my way. That is the important part of this hobby.

Another thing some say they don't like until they hear itand then make positive comments on is the sound....

......8" glasspacks and a healthy 302.

8" glasspacks? Ya think you could spare the space? My GT resonators are bigger than that. :)

Now, if I were in need of a new system, I'd get the Arvinode. Wave-tuned muffler system, the "mufflers" were essentially acoustically tuned straight through pipes.

I also like the slightly raked look. Thats why my car has slightly larger tires in the rear and shackles. I just think it makes more sense for me to lower the rear back down and run the same size on all 4 tires.

Here is mine. Please ignore the poorly fitting H pipe that hangs low. I have resolved that issue.

I say no for coil over shocks in the rear as well. Its the same type of problem as the air shocks.

If you want the rear end raised its either got to be lift springs or shackles.

Az Pete, those little glasspacks sound great. I didn't know you could still get them. All I see are 12 inch ones. What springs do you have on the car right now? The ones from JCW?

The glasspacks are classed as 12" but the body is 8"X2.5". The entire red area measures 11.5" The car has long tube Hookers and a 3"x18" tip in front of the wheels. One thing that helped the sound was that there in no pipe extending into the tip. This gives the max amount of echo chamber for sound. I spent some time on my last car to get the sound I like. Another thing on the glass packs.....if you look inside them, there are small cups designed to catch the exhaust and route it to the "glass" for mufflering. I had them mounted backwards so the cups catch nothing. It does make a different sound....

Yes, the springs I use are from JCW. They have been on the car for close to 10,000 miles now and my last car had over 15,000 miles on them when I sold it.

Those Arvinode mufflers look a bit long for me.....lol

Of course the little 302 has nothing to do with the sound either....lol

Thats the way the factory did it. I'm not sure why they do it like that, except maybe to make it fit up against the floorpans.

Back in high school when me 65 was still an I6, I had reproduction/replacement exhaust on it, and it was done similarly.

Since the glasspacks are red, I'm guessing they are Cherry Bomb.

I didn't realize that it mattered, since I have seen footnotes for glasspacks that say reversable.

Good point about not running the pipe through the tip. It does make a difference. I always have mine installed so that the tip is utilized as a megaphone.
