Cam suggestions

Hey guys this is my first thread I am new to this forum...

Well I'm looking to do upgraded cams on my 06 GT, I want something with a little bit rougher idle, I dont mind having to do a Spring upgrade, Dont think I want to have to do a tune right away, maybe something I can install and drive and tune later on. I've looked at comp cams, anyone do any trick flow cams that they would like to talk about? Would like to hear some suggestions or maybe what you have put in your car and how the car responded to the upgrade.

Thanks!

Welcome! :nice: Glad you could join us here...

First off let me burst your bubble :D Cams=tune. The computers are just to sensitive in our engines. You will need a tune when you do cams! So if you already have a handheld tuner then just save up 50-75$ more so you can get one or better yet, save up some money for a good dyno tune. Cams are a good way of making a lot of power, but they need tuning!

FRPP Hot Rods here...awesome choppy/rough idle and a noticeable gain on the top end. They are NSR cams, but like 08GT stated you will definitely need a tune or the car will not run right. BTW, definitely checkout Brenspeeds new "Detroit Rocker" cams.

Here is a crappy cell phone vid of mine:

Daniel is serving popcorn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dude your car sounds awesome.

OP, like the others said you gotta have a tune with cams. You cant even do a cai without a tune with this engine. Well you can but its a pos cai.

I have some detroit rockers headed my way!!!!!! Oh yeah!!

Well we mean an email tune at the very least :D A handheld like SCT or Diablo with an email tune from a reputable tuner can get you between 30-60 rwhp with cams depending on the cams you get and if you have a CAI to help with airflow.

No doubt the 3v engines love cams, the 3v computers don't :p

After cams though a dyno tune would be ideal! They can dial it in perfectly, but you will spend more money depending on how much shops charge in your area. Hopefully that helps, if you are still confused or have more questions then just ask! :nice:

+1

Brenspeed, bama, tillman etc......are the tuners.

u may want to consider comp cams. they make cams that are nsr (no springs required) that are a direct swap from ur oe cams and require no tuning!! plus they sound pretty good.

I have mutha- thumpr's stage II's and I love them - got the tune from Brenspeed SCT - everything is going pretty good with it - I'm in contact with them on (2) issues - I have blow-by' lockouts - when I first start the rpms really ramp up....and sometimes when slowing down the rpms keep at 3k to 2.5 k after I let off the gas....but then ramp down - plus I have an exhaust smell - that wasn;t there before - anyone have experienced this?...brenspeed is working on a new tune for the ramping....and they just got back to me about the smell - b/c of the mutha thumprs have a controlled 'misfire' built into the cams which can cause all kinds of side effects ....this probably one of them....?

Make sure you research the cams and requirements, IE do you need the phaser eliminators and so forth. I am running the Hot Rods and love them, I have installed the Comp stage 2 NSR cams on another 10 GT and he dynoed 4 horse more than me, the downfall is that they have very little lope, which is what you want if I understood your post. The thumpers are good cams too, but require the eliminators. Thats most of the reason I didnt go with them. The detroit rockers are supposed to be good cams also. I am installing a set next week in a customers car. Guess we will see where they set...may be changing out the hot rod cams...LOL

Hey guys thanks for all the input...from what i have been looking at i think i am going to go with brenspeed detroit rockers, and get a SCT X3 tuner from AmericanMuscle.com because when you buy there tuner you get free email tunes for life. Thanks alot, i would still like to hear about everyones Camshaft aftermath.

If you're going to go with Detroit Rockers, then I would definately get my tune from Brenspeed. Since they are a custom ground cam made by Brenspeed, not everyone is going to have the cam profiles to tune it right. Also, if you buy your mods from Brenspeed then I believe that they supply free tunes with them. You just tell them what other mods you have. I have had nothing but great service from them. :nice:

I had a friend just got his thumper cam done from Brenspeed. When he did his tune from them he went with a dyno tune, yes it cost alittle bit more money but his A/R ratio was right on the money at 12.8. If I am not mistaking I think the dyno tune cost him $350.00 and hearing it from him it was well worth it. Talk to them they will tell what your best way to go.

Comp cam thumper is good cam but you have to do a spring up grade. But the detriot rocker cam that Brenspeed offers you don't need to upgrade anything. Now you get the same hp out of both cams, but from what I heard you lose some low torque power with the comp cam but not the detriot rocker cam. I would def get a dyno tune if you do the cam that would be something that I would not wait on. And to be honest I would not trust an email tune for a cam, most people on here may agree with me.
