Running Hot after temp sending unit installed

Im waiting for my thermostat and water pump, just wondering would I be able to use the same belts? do I have to adjust them etc... or do I just remove them and reinstall them? what I want to know is it an easy and straight forward job replacing the water pump?

Long story short, I ordered an fan shroud and thermostat and gasket and even a water pump, the order is delayed and i dont know when i will receive them.


anyways I couldn't wait til my parts come so I did alot of search on the net for thermostats and realized ACDelco (131-87) makes one that fit, got it today, made a gasket and installed it,,, My car is still running hot, as if I haven't changed my thermostat,

Im going crazy my car has been parked for almost a month now,, what can I do I wana drive the car before its the weather is too hot.

Could it be a problem with the radiator?

what are the alternatives? what else can i try






by the way my heater seems disconnected does that have anything to do with the overheating to I have do disconnect the hose etc...
 
If you STILL have not installed a graduated aftermarket temp gauge and are still relying on that factory gauge for your reading, and thinking 195* is hot, then you may as well sell the car now. 195*F is NOT hot. My 331 regularly hits 240*F and no damage results from this. I'm sure it's also gone hotter too. Do I like it doing that? No. But I've learned to live with it.

I will order an aftermarket gauge, but how would I know if the car is over heating or not without a gauge let say if im driving it. are there any symptoms to watch out for.

I still don't think your car is running HOT at 195. That is the temp that it is supposed to run at. Is the radiator steaming or boiling over etc?

What temp is the T stat you put in?

If the gauge is reading high it may just be the sending unit or the instrument cluster voltage regulator.

I don't like a bunch of aftermarket gauges. You can use the aftermarket temp gauge for testing purposes and watch what your factory guage does at different temps. Then you'll know how to read the factory gauge.

Why don't you get an infrared thermometer like this? I think Advance Auto has one.

I have this one from Summit. You can point it at the thermostat housing and radiator etc and compare temps.

Thats good to be concerned about possible damage etc. By the way the newer cars don't necessarily have accuarate readings either.

If the radiator's not boiling over, you're fine. Do you have a coolant reservior to catch the excess coolant when it expands to where it's too much for the radiator to contain ? This isn't an indication of it being too hot, sometimes it's more an indication there's too much coolant in the system. When the coolant flashes to steam, then it's overheated as steam doesn't transfer heat from the engine to the radiator. In running straight water combined with a cap that has a low pressure rating, you can run normal temps but yet still have the water flash to steam. This is just one reason to run a mix of coolant and water, instead of straight water alone.
 
So i decided to have another look at my heating issue with the feedback I received.

I got myself a digital thermometer made a simple holder for it - pictured below,

Topped up the coolant

The starting temp of radiator coolant was at 92F with the engine off

I started the engine (cold start) and the coolant temperature rose gradually to 195 which was HOT or the max then I stopped the engine (@ 115F the needle was in the middle)

When I stopped the engine the coolant started to flood and came out of the over flow tube, a lot of coolant came out, pictured bellow and in the video

When you topped up the coolant, you didn't have any room left in the radiator for the expanding coolant as it gets hot. Without a catch can, it runs out the overflow tube... Perfectly normal and expected. It will only do this the first time. As it cools the space from the contracting coolant is replaced by pulling air in through the radiator cap. If you removed the cap after it has FULLY cooled and look at the coolant level it should still be above the fins.

Put a gallon of water in the trunk with a few rags and take it for a drive. The temp gage may climb to a high indication just before the thermostat opens. Again...normal indication. See if you can determine when the temp gage runs high. It should level out, but it depends on if you are cruising or stuck in stop and go traffic. If huge plumes of steam jet out from under the hood, STOP. This is overheating.

When it cools down, use the rags to SLOWLY open the radiator cap and see how much coolant was puked by the system, by pouring in the water. If it takes more than a half gallon, The radiator may need replacment or cleaning. Also check your belts. Sometimes they can slip without squealing.
 
I just finished installing a fan shroud and a lower hose spring and I changed the thermostat (195) recently and it seems to to make a big diffrence I will put on a new radiator cap also. While the engine is idling the radiator runs at 195 degree F using a thermometer in the radiator, seems good to me.

I would like to know how to install a second Water Temp Gauge, please follow my new thread for your suggestions.

Ok I found a picture. This was done by a backyard type person. They actually sell a kit like this meant to run with your heater hose. For situations like this.

I have one of these, JEGS Liquid-Filled Engine Thermometers - JEGS
If you have a factory style cast iron thermostat housing with the temp sensor hole, this will screw right into it.

my factory gauge is almost over the high end limit and ther mechanical one shown above is only reading 200

Thats a cool idea. I just picked up one on ebay thats made by Marshal. It looks more old school like the other underhood gauges.
