Cam questions...

Hey guys,

I'm a noob when it comes to cams, so i have a few questions.

I want some cams, that don't make the idle obnoxious, but still give me a pretty good power.

Do i need new valve springs and such?

the car has 75000 miles on it

Depends on which cams you get. New valve springs wouldn't hurt but with most stage 1s you don't need them. Hitech says you don't need them for their stages two but I have never seen any hitech car other then the one on youtube run any decent times at the track. I suggest looking into CMS or MHS for cams.
 
I wouldn't drop $600 for a mild set of cams. If you aren't planning on doing longtubes as well, you're kind of wasting money.

Hitech's do offer solid gains and are relatively mild, but aside from them, I personally wouldn't spend the money on a smaller set of cams.

You don't "need" better springs with the Hitech's or many "Stage 1" cams, but they are a good idea if you plan on running the car hard. Stock springs are good to 6300rpm or so before they float, but they can only handle up to a certain sized cam before it becomes an issue sooner.
 
I thought about cams too but was scared off by the people having idle problems along with the car stalling out.

To those that have cams, any of you guys regret putting them in, like are any of you still having problems with your car not running right, because my car runs really well and don't want to lose the drive ability factor.

Sorry if I kinda tacked on to your thread, but cam install could be in my near future and didn't want to start a very similar thread.
 
If you have a decent tune, the cam's compliment your other mods, they are timed correctly, and your IAC is in good shape you shouldn't have idle problems with aftermarket cams.

98COBRA281 has some very aggressive cams along with a short runner intake, and I haven't heard him say anything about his car stalling. Hopefully he'll chime in.

Stage 1 grinds offer a increase in top end torque and give a nice rumble at idle. Stgae 2's begin to attract spectators , whether wanted or not is a matter of opinion.

Both can be dropped in without the addition of new valve springs, stage 1' more so than the stage 2's, but I highly recommend paying the extra for springs. Your 75,000miles is mild wear but later down the line you'll be changing again and adding more time to the job. Do it all at once and witha set of springs that can handle the rpm your cams work best. They usually do their best at top end. And all will work accordingly.

I love rumble at idle and the roar when punched of a cammed mustang...imo...
And never had stalling issues. Timing and tune are keen...have a competent installer...

Go with hitech stage 2s you don't need vavle springs and they make good power. Without long tubes I made 275rwhp 298rwtq. With long tubes I now make 293rwhp and 310rwtq. The nice thing is I gained 35lds of rwtq at 2800rpm over stock headers. So the lt headers make much more tq down low then the stock headers.

:nice: I've also heard good things about the Hitech Stage 2's. IIRC, Nick McKinney says some people have PTV issues with the Hitech Stage 2's if they don't take the time to properly degree the cams.
