Took my 68 out to the golf course today. When I turned on the car to leave, it cranked, started, but wouldn't stop trying to turn over the engine, even though it had already started. I could turn the key back to the original position but it just kept cranking. I had to pull the battery cables to make it stop. What's up with that? What is my next step (After having it towed home).

since it worked fine before then failed, my first guess is a stuck starter relay, sticking in the "start" position allow current to keep flowing to the starter. Follow the positive battery cable to a cylindrical piece on the inner fenders. You'll see some small wires and another big wire on the opposite side which goes to the starter itself. That cylindrical thing is the starter relay. easy to replace and doesnt cost much. You can probably find the same thing at a local parts store as well.

Starter Solenoids

If it happens again, just whack the solenoid with a rock, stick, hammer, etc. It'll stop. And get a new solenoid.

I had the exact same experience with my starter solenoid, but that was on my 88 GT. I replaced the solenoid and it hasnt done it since. Also on a side note, if any of you are running those quick disconnect battery knobs, I would suggest taking them off. Ive had them on both my cars and they just caused alot of ignition problems for me. All good now though!!
