Dyno-disapointment

Got back from the dyno and didnt put the numbers down i was hoping for. Trick Flow upper H/C/I kit. Advanced 34 degs @ 3000 rpm. BBK cold air, stock MAF, 65mm TB, 24# injectors, long tubes, cat delete, mac prochamber, flowmaster 40s Any suggestions on what im doing wrong. Also, the block was rebuilt years ago by the first owner, im the third. No idea what he did, but the block is painted orange so it was definitely out of the car and the pistons has a flat center section and slopes down on either side, wish i took a pic when it was apart and i cant find any pistons like that for sale but someone suggested that its a defunct dish piston. Runs smooth with mid-grade gas.

I had a close setup before. I used a 70mm TB and C&L 76mm. I could be wrong but it seems like your motor is like a fat kid trying to suck his milkshake threw a coffee straw.

Your tuner should have pointed that out. Also did you get a chip burned? 94/95's can get funky if not tuned right. They needed to adjust more than the basics to get it running at its optimum.

Yeah, I'd change the MAF. Those numbers are pretty bad for a Trick Flow setup.

Agreed, running the TFS Trackheat H/C/I myself. Granitelli 75mm MAF,70 MM TB and 24lbs inject, K & N CAI.. It put down 271/277 or 277/271 (can't find the sheet, but the #'s I rememeber) on a mustang dyno with the original stock AODE , and it "felt" like it had more power after it was tuned. IIRC the Street Burner (used to be called Street Heat was 10/15 hp lower but that was in the catalogue.

The Dyno Dynamics dyno is well known for giving numbers much lower than those from a Dynojet. Looking at the shape of the curves and the fact that the engine pulls well up to 5750rpm where the dyno pull stops, I'm not so sure there's anything wrong at all despite the 240/265ish peaks. I suggest you run the car at the track. The 1/4 mile dyno will reveal if there really is anything wrong.

Make sure you don't have a vacuum leak, make sure there are installation errors, then get it tuned on the dyno. Your MAF and TB will easily support 30-40 more horse. These computers have no give whatsoever; I'd argue that a completely stock SN95 needs a re-tune.

stock MAF...24# injectors...

...

Didn't get the tune yet...

Right there is the problem...

If your car is a GT and you are running 24# injectors with a stock 19# MAF, it is running rich.

Either pay to have the MAF transfer curve fixed via a tune, buy something to tune it yourself, or get a properly calibrated MAF to run with the 24# injectors.

Just so you know the Cobra MAF is not calibrated for 24# injectors either. It is identical to the GT MAF.

Mass Air Meters : Promracing.com, The Standard in Mass Air Flow Meters

With just the 24# injectors, you should be able to get it running pretty darn good just by replacing the MAF. Perhaps not perfectly, but pretty darn good.

Didn't get the tune yet, I didn't want to spend money on the tune if I didn't have the right parts and it sounds like I need to open up the breathing.

All good points. After hearing this, I must say that the 94/95 puter an a finicky SOB and must have the tune, especially with your mods. On the MAF..IIRC, Grady has the stock maf on his and is putting down over 300rwhp now. So I don't agree totally with the MAF comments but to each his own.

You can go Grady's route and self tune or have it done by a professional.

which dyno did you use? i live in olympia, i went to hp ranch. i have a similar setup.

302, trickflow h/c/i, 70mm tb, 76mm maf, 24's, shorty headers, t-5 trans.

i put down 294? i believe hp, and 317 tq on a mustang dyno. my car ran 13.0 this weekend on 18" street tires, although it is lighter then yours. its a good combo, just need to get it dialed in.

I agree with the above...only reason to consider the MAF was if it was a GT. Since its a Cobra, the computer is set up to handle the 24#ers.

You said its "runs smooth" on mid-grade. Does it feel like a dog? That is, are you only complaining because of what the dyno said, or are you really lacking in the power department? Could be a tune will help you out, but it could also be that the dyno numbers just are not that important. What did the dyno guy think about the numbers? I mean if evey car he puts on comes out on the low side of expected, seems like he would be willing to tell you that...unless he is in the aftermarket parts business...

I went to Dyno Tuning Services in Lacey, WA, which used to be Horsepower Connection before new ownership. The car pulls well above 3000 rpm but just feels like there should be more on tap. But its true that im mostly bummed about the dyno result, i know i know, cant base everything on the dyno. Its just the money and time i put into it i was expecting more. I'll have to go find a track and will see how that goes. Anyone know a track in western washington thats noobie friendly?

No worries drake. I am not trying to insult you or your numbers or trying to say the the numbers printed out on your dyno sheet werent what you claim. I know yo uare an honest guy at least from what I can tell AND I am sorry that my post sounded that way. :(

Let's have Mr Lasota get his day in the spot light for some extraordinary numbers. To the rest of this post - NM.
