Hey guys I am looking at buying a 97 6 cyl body with a 351 windsor motor that is bored 30 over, w 305 cams and springs, an edelbrock intake mani, shorty headers, SINGLE flowmaster exhaust, and 20" wheels. Now I know roughly what this should put down, and went on a test drive yesterday. It seemed very slow for a 351 windsor. The idle is nice and smooth, which worries me because of the cam it is supposed to have. its not leaking, smoking, overheating etc. Do you think a single exhaust, and 20" chrome wheels will make a huge difference in speed? I don't want to buy it and find out its not a Windsor. I have heard tips of what a Windsor looks like, and how to tell if it is a Windsor. Some of them were that it will have 6 bolts instead of 8 on the valve cover, the air filter will be about an inch above the spot where the distributor goes into the block. Well it has the 6 bolts on the valve cover, the air filter is about an inch above where the distributor mounts to the block. I tested the car yesterday and looking at making a decision today, but need some more advice. The 20's will be off right after I buy it and dumps will be put on lol just so everyone here knows....Thanks for any fast help!

So if you are trying to see if it is a 351 or a 302 block. I believe there are some differences around where the alternator is for easy identification due to the block height difference. If it was me I would probably look at the intake manifold. There should be a part number and the 302 and 351 are not interchangeable.

You said it has single exhaust???? that's already sounding odd, do you mean single chamber flowmaster? and 305 springs and cams?? That's odd sounding too. It could just be a stock 351 with the 302 timing and everything made to work in the car, do you have pictures?

Yeah, it's going to be slow. Even if it is a 351, they've pulled it out of a truck, and plummed it through a single exhaust. If it idles smoothly, it has a stock truck cam in it. That quality of the work (given that they plummed it through the stock V6 single exhaust) implicates that the person who installed the engine was talentless, and therefore wouldn't have the tuning ability to make it idle smoothly with a cam. The heads on a 302 and 351 are interchangeable, so there would be 6 bolts on either. I think a 351 cleveland has 8 bolts on the valvecover, but that's a completely different engine all together. I would go with Adam's method of checking whether it is a 302 or a 351, by the distance across the intake. A picture would go a long way too, if you could post one. I have no idea what 305 cams are.

If the car has a 351w plumbed through some single exhaust and 20" rims. I would avoid it in the first place. Who knows what the hell ghettoness took place on the swap with the car.

What could have taken place
"oh, **** I need some assembly lube for these bearings or some ****. Oh I will just use the peanut butter from my sandwich. Hellz ya. I am building an engine"

But seriously does the build look as shoty as it sounds?
