Icing down intake, Good idea or Bad idea???

Anyone had any problems with iceing down your intake???

I was at the track yesterday and a guy told me that people have had problems after iceing down their intakes, specifically water entry into the spark plug wells.

Anyone have any issues with this? Just want to know for next weeks trip to the track, should I take the ice or leave it at home?

On a side note, I ran a best of 14.3 @ 98mph with 2.3 60ft times. This was only my 2nd trip to the track with this car, and Im hoping next week will bring some 13 second passes.

How long are you sitting in the staging area between runs? If you are sitting an hour or longer, I would think the intake/motor would be cooled off by then and you really wouldnt need to ice it, just keep your hood open.

If you are not sitting long enough to cool everything down I recommend laying a towel on the intake and setting the bag of ice on top of the towel (dont fold the towel double or triple), if you want to be extra sure no water runs into the spark plug wells, put the bag of ice in a garbage bag or something, tie it and then lay it on the towel then all thats going to come off that will be the sweat from the ice, and that shouldnt be enough to hurt anything.

Is it ok to quickly cool down a hot plastic intake manifold? To me it doesn't seem safe, it would probably crack, but I also don't know the exact material and properties of the manifold, so I could be wrong...

I wondered about the plastic intake as well. My car sat for a while before I put ice on it. I had made 5 back to back passes in about 25 minutes and then let the car sit with the hood closed for about an hour before icing down the intake. At that point the intake was slighty warm but the throttle body was still hot to the touch. So I broke out the ice. I had been driving for about 2 hours before I got to the track so the car was pretty hot to begin with.

I think next week Ill just put a towel between the intake and the bag of ice. Ill also wait for the car to cool down a little before I even go for the ice, just to be safe.....for my intakes sake!
 
Not speaking for anybody else but myself, but I think laying off the cheeseburgers would have a bigger impact on my times than anything I'd gain from icing a manifold.

icing a plastic manifold is kind of a waste of time.

think of it like this. icing an old school aluminum one can act as a heat sink and cool the engine really well. icing plastic... not so much. its an insulator... literally :)
 
Good point! These intakes seem to cool down pretty good on their own anyway. The ice was just an old habbit from my Foxbody days!


Anyways this week I pulled a 14.21@98mph with 2.22 60 ft times. Then backed it with two more 14.20 passes also with 2.20 60 ft times. No ice involved lol. Was trying for 13's, but just couldnt get there. Still better than last week though.
 
The only mods to the car are those listed in my signature. And some Gt500 wheels and tires, which I dont really consider a mod.

I do have a bunch of parts waiting to go on, but im trying to get the car into the 13's first. No point in adding go fast parts if you cant drive the car to begin with!!!
