heres a little background:

my dad was letting my little brother drive the fastback during the fall...just got his DL. it was making a funny noise so my dad followed him and the motor let go. fast forward to now and they have drug out a 289 from the garage. opened it up and it looked great after sitting for almost 20 years. new water pump, fuel pump, gaskets...the works. well its time to drop it in and dad wants to put a set of headers on. today he calls saying that he wants to do some 70s style side pipes ( think 70s van with murals and bubble windows) and shorty headers. after trying to convince him that itll look like ***** and that he should go LT, x pipe, nice mufflers and turndowns hes still stuck on sidepipes:nonono:

its a 65 with 289, he wants a SS shorty. what do you guys recommend?

Tell your Dad (in as nice a way as you can) to put down the bong and turn off the Cheech and Chong movie. I grew up in the '70's (I'm 48) and side pipes were a bad idea then and a worse idea now. As for headers, I recommend tri-y's and an H-pipe. The tri-y's provide lots of ground clearance and the h-pipe sounds better than an x-pipe.

haha, thanks! im glad to know that im not the only one who thinks this is crazy. i tried to be nice yesterday but i think im gonna have to be a little more stern. he cant exactly do anything other than not call me.

im 31, my step brother who the car is for is 16 or 17. my dad calls me everytime he needs something found online. today he calls asking about an MSD, ignition conversion kit, and coil. after i told him what to get he asked if i had any more suggestions. i said yea..."long tubes, x pipe, good mufflers and a pair of turndowns" all i head was click!

im not really sure why he doesnt get his younger son who is more internet savy to look for things. i dont mind but it does get a little annoying sometimes.
