Third Time at the Track

Third Time at the Track - Video inside

Third time ever at the track. Also happens to be the third time with this car. I though I was launching much better, but the time slips don't lie. Best 60' was 218. This is with a set of 275 Hoosier DR. I know what to do, but apparently need more seat time.

I was doing a healthy burnout and lowering my psi each time, ending around 25psi (was getting close to bracket time and needed some matching numbers). I was launching at 2500-3000rpm and slipping the hell out of the clutch.

A few questions: Those of you running Hoosier DR, what PSI do you run in them? What RPM do most of you launch with mods close to mine?

Best pass of the day was a 9.38 with a 566 reaction time and a 220 60'.

Good news: Won the Jr bracket for the day getting an almost 3 ft trophy and $200.

Edit: The $200 is going straight into the car. It's reward for me beating the hell out of it. Thinking of sub frame connectors. Trying to decide between MM and Steeda. Input needed.

If you are running hoosier drag radials, you need to drop that pressure down to around 15-18 psi or so. As far as launching, if the track prep is pretty good, try leaving around 4 grand and doing a quick slip, should not need to slip the clutch to much because of the drag radials. Should be able to almost drop the clutch and go. Def get some sub frames with that money!:nice:

Track prep is sub-par (if there is any). It's only $15 bucks to get in a race, and it's not crowded so you get plenty of passes (about 15 this time). I'd rather learn how to drive it here then at a more expensive track with not as many passes.

The problem might be the heat. I would drop the air pressure to 15-18#. You will get there. when my 2000 GT was NA I ran five 13.85's 1/4--8.9,s 1/8th in a row in 90 degree weather on a 2.0x 60 foot. This was with stock gears and a Magnaflow exhaust.

I agree with heat and psi. Last time at the track I started at 25psi and let some out every pass until I was down to 12psi. I figured anything lower would hurt it. Best 60' was 210.

I think the 4.10's plus track prep is hurting. My buddy was running in the 8's with older Hoosier DR and stock gears in his 98 GT.

I would also say it's track prep. There's no reason a bolt on, geared GT should be burning off a set of properly heated drag radials with low pressure aside from poor prep.

What was your highest MPH?

If you go to a track that hooks, you'll see a lot better results. A hot burnout and around 15psi (each car and set of tires respond differently) you can really up the launch RPM and how hard your launching. If you want to be safe, slip the clutch just enough to start rolling and then let it out the rest of the way as fast as you can. If you hook, keep upping the launch RPM and you should see your times drop.

No MPH? That's some backwoods stuff right there, hah.

Good news is, car sounds healthy. Your shifting isn't bad either.

Backwoods is an understatement. You have til about the 1/4 mile mark to slow down or else your deep into the woods. Haha.

Now that I think about it, my buddy with the stock 98 was running a set of 315 Hoosiers. Maybe I'll try to snag them for my next time at the track. There's absolutely no reason why second gear would chirp with heated DR.

My worst reaction time all day was a 650ish, and that's when I tried to launch in 3rd. Damn short throw. Haha

Don't feel bad, our local track is the same way. Very little shutdown room, and if for some unfortunate reason your brakes fail, you can choose a house, trees, or a ditch to slow you down.

You may try the 315's but the less tire you can get away with using the better. Honestly, your 275's should get the job done, but maybe the extra width will help with the poor prep.

I wouldn't worry about the tires chirping on the 1-2. Focus on getting off the line with as much traction as possible. You'll hear cars that dead hook on a launch chirp the 1-2, 2-3, etc.

How was your buddy launching? 8's out of a STOCK 98 is borderline incredible.

sounds like you guys had a blast! i got my caster camber plates in today so hopefully next time your at the track i'll be able to make it. been to that track several times with our old 03 cobra but never with my GT. that was back when it didnt have a clocker or a tree  hahah THAT was backwoods! still a great time never know what will show up.

There's a sand pit here that's smaller than the local playground's sand box. Then you get a downhill slope with trees. Haha

He was running like 8.9. Dumping the clutch at 4k and dead hooking.

It was tons of fun. I though I lost every bracket race and had to look at the slip to see I won. Never in a millions years thought I would win. Cut a 500 reaction on one pass, and ran my time on the next getting me a bye.
