Power Windows stayed down - Please Help!

Hey Guys,

I searched around and couldn't find a thread that would help.

I hate to bug you guys but I'm clueless...here goes

1989 5.0 GT

Over the weekend I lowered passenger side window down for fresh air but was unable to raise it again until yesterday afternoon when I all I did was open the passenger side power window switch bezel. (Note that the window did not work from either driver or passenger switch.) The window came back up fine after that.

Now this morning I lowered both windows and now they both wont raise! When I press the buttons, I see the alt meter go slightly down like it normally does when operating the window....

any clue? should I replace all switches?

Please help.

thanks!

Motor removal & replacement
Remove the door mounted speaker & the upholstery panel to gain access to the motor. There are 3 screws (5/16" hex head, I think) that secure the motor in place. Remove them and the motor comes out without any problems. Once you remove all the screws from the motor, and it falls away from the gear teeth on the arm for the glass, the glass will move up and down. You may need a helper to hold the glass once the motor screws are out, since the gear on the motor holds the glass from sliding up or down

Motor interchange
The motor is the same for left side or right side, only the gearboxes are different. If you can't find the complete assembly for the side you want, you can get either side and use the old gearbox on the new motor.

The window motor gearbox has 3 plastic rollers that are a safety clutch to prevent possible injury if the window is rolled up while something or someone is hanging out the window. The plastic rollers will often disintegrate into chunks of plastic and the window will no longer roll up or down. The motor runs, but the window does not move or only move a lttle.

The Help! section of your local auto parts store will have the replacement plastic rollers.

Are you saying the Motor is bad or the bushings?

I am having the same issue with my 89 LX, the drivers side window stayed down but the passenger side still works. the amp meter on the dash goes down when i push the button, but i get no response from the window. no noise or anything. Is this also the motor? maybe it needs to be messed around with?

The Passenger side power window motor is in! Now both windows work flawless.

Up/Down motions are QUIET and SMOOTH!

94GT, jrichker was right....I opened the motor and saw the plastic rollers were mush. Odd that it happened to BOTH my windows at the same time.

I ordered the power motor from Tom at foxresto.com. They didn't have it listed on their website but had it in stock so make sure you call.

Also, in my research, I found that LMR sells the motor, but you need to cut the wire adapter off of yours and install onto new motor....also their motor comes with an adapter plate since the holes don't line up.

What I ordered from Fox Resto was direct fit motor with proper wire adapters. Took me 15 min each side....with Door panel remove/ reinstall. I paid $75 per motor and $15 per NOS switch. I wanted to cover all bases plus the little up/down arrows were worn out on mine.

I just wanted to send a huge thanks to jrichker and Tom from foxresto.com.

94GT, let me know if you have any questions. Good luck and keep us posted...

Rob

Glad your windows are back to working order again, but where on God's green earth did you get that wildly incorrect information?

Our Window motors are brand new exact replacements for the original. Absolutely no cutting, splicing, or adapter plates invoved.

LRSjmac is correct about exact replacements from LRS.
Bought new motors from LRS, installed them, but motors only work in one direction, down like my factory original motors that i took out on my 91. I even bench tested all 4 motors, both new and old, and they work fine hooked up to a car battery and jumper cables. Wish i bench tested before i bought new motors but factory motors are old and want to replace them anyway before paint job while door is appart. Switch polarity, and the gear spins the oposite direction. I need to bypass or test my switches. Both driver side and passenger side only roll down. Volt meter detects votage at connector where motors hook up, and when you press up and down, it switches polarity and shows voltage as it should. Switch seems like its good as well as its getting 12 volts to the connector where window motors hook up for both directions. Just not getting enouph current to spin motor to roll windows down. Not sure why but its hard to find this problem.
Cant figure this out, but i'm replacing my old switches as well. replaced 2 allready from junk yard 10 years ago and that fixed it then, bought all new ones at Mustangs Unlimited. 10.95. each and will try these next tomorow.
Any suggestions would be apreciated as i want to get this fixed along with door pin before paint job. If new switches fail, i'm disconnecting my whole door harness from above drivers kick panel to inspect, as a relay was put in back in 1992, (that i removed) that was hacked into the left door harness for remote door locks for alarm.
Door lock actuators failed, replaced both of them and now they are good along with the switches for them which i thought were bad.
Door and Window switches are a bad design on these fox mustangs as they seem to last only 8 years or so. Had car since new in 91, switches lasted 10 years, so maybe its time to replace again even though the car sits mostly now and not a daily driver.

The problem with the switches seem to be that the dielectric grease tends to gum up the contacts so that they don't work. Clean the switches with non-flammable brake parts cleaner and it will fix many switch problems.

window fixed

Hi guys, we pulled the motor out, it spun, I moved the window up and down, then re installed it, all works! I have a thrilled son!
We will post pictures of my son with the car later.
thanks for your help, now on to the rear main seal....
