I have a ticking coming from the rear of my drivers side head/valve cover. It does it on start up and doesn't go away. I bought the car already built (306c.i. forged Scat, 9.5:1 cr, worked GT40P heads, 1.7rr, and supposedly a custom cam that I don't have specs for, as far as internals). I'm thinking that it is a rocker since it doesn't go away on warm up. I was told by someone that they thought it was a broken pushrod, but I'm thinking against that as I haven't had a change in drivability/power. Verdict?

I'd check for an exhaust leak first. Get a mechanic's stethoscope if it's not the exhaust and poke around. I had ticking also and I need to get my rockers re-adjusted on cylinders 2 and 3.

Hey man, I have the exact same thing going on. Ticking from driver's side valve cover. I too bought my car already built (302, GT40's, 1.7 RR & TFS 1 cam).

I pulled the valve covers the other night and found that I could just barely rock to of the arms back and forth, just enough to make a clicking sound. I pulled the arms and checked the valve tips, the rollers on the arms, the pushrods and the lifters. None of them had any signs of wear or any damage.

My rocker arms are pedestal mount, I don't know if this is what you have or not. I suspect that the pushrods in my car could literally be a hair longer. I am planning on replacing my cam soon, so I just put it all back together. Since there was no wear or damage on the valvetrain, I figured no harm done. The car was built a little over a year ago, so it seems to be doing fine with the minor ticking.

You will have to check yours out and see what your condition is. For me, it wasn't bad. But I would check yours just to make sure.

I pulled the drivers side valve cover yesterday and couldn't find anything visually wrong, so I started feeling of the rockers. There were two that had vertical play in them, so I'm hoping after I get them set properly and everything back together the tick will be cured.

I'm at a loss. I got them all adjusted right and torqued to 26 ft. lbs. Still got the ticking. Can a rocker be bad and have no visual damage? Also I didn't notice on the drivers side, but when I was doing the passenger side there were 1/8"-1/4" steel spacers under the channel that the pedestals sit in. I'm guessing they ordered the pushrods too long and used them to shim so they could get it adjusted right. Shouldn't have anything to do with the click though, as it just started making the noise.
