Who has ran into this problem????

351W with a t-5 in an 87GT ... this is my first time pulling and putting in ANY engine into any car, so i may have missed something.. ANYWAY, this was originally a 302 with a aod trans so it's a complete swap trans and all...my problem is that when i installed the motor and trans...the shifter is too far forward.(toward the engine bay). i mean Im missing it by about 1/2 inch or so till it comes up all the way into where it is suppose to be.... what happens if i cut the trans tunnel???? i dont wanna half ass it ya know?? i would like to know if there is something i can look to do? Thanks guys...lol

im just a computer dork 29 yr old punk trying to get my hands dirty redoing my fox...lol

Thanks for reading bud. I really didnt know there was a difference but, yeah it's out of a fox body, at least that's what the tag says on it. Is it possible i installed it improperly? I didnt install motor and trans at the same time...so i dunno...it looks pretty straight forward...put motor in...mount bolts go into k-member...then, go under car with it on ramps..and lift up trans and start the bolts...then mount crossmember.....sounded simple enough...

I think im the only one i saw with this problem..i've searched a handful of forums..and nothing...maybe i can loosen things up and get it in ???

Thanks again smokedya, any ideas?

Derek

I have done done a 4 cyl conversion aod to 302 5 speed. The hole in the tunnel is different at the front but not necessary to cut. what's not fitting or hitting pics would be wonderful. thanks

Agreed with above. I did a 4cyl aod conversion and did have to cut a little but I dont think it was a 1/2" worth...... Does it look like it will still be centered in the center console where the shifter comes through???

Make sure the motor mounts aren't on backwards... did that once. Didn't realize it till I had the engine lowered in the bay. Had to pull it back out, swap the mounts the lower it back in.

wow lots of replies..thanks guys...

Ok yes this was originally a 4 cylinder car....aod or 5 speed i dont know..but they (previous owner) swapped over to a 302 with an aod. the shifter is a hurst shifter and i have the complete dash and center console out so im not sure if it will be centered in the center console or not, i am off by about a half inch or so... i will try to get pics... and post them, the motor mounts, by the looks of it...if they were on backwards then i would be Way off lol.. I guess if i could draw a mental picture for now for you guys.. ok

the shifter is bolted into the trans by 4 bolts i think.... the 2 closest to the firewall are hidden under the trans hole .. It's close to coming up through the hole properly, but just off by a little bit , the trans to motor bolts all are in and correct... the trans is mounted up to the trans cross member correctly as well . The cross member is slotted as you all know, and the trans bolts are at their farthest forward position..(closest to the motor) on the crossmember... Im going to take pics right now, did i confuse you guys even more?? lol

Thanks again guys... i'm starting to realize the ol' saying "if it's got boobs or wheels, it's bound to give ya problems..lol"
