ok, im brand new here so to start off ill give alittle info about the car.. Got a 92 lx 5.0 ....converted to T-5 ( original auto computer still in it) minor upgrades include msd distributor and cap, msd coil, full BBK cold air, 2 1/2in off road H-PIPE with series 40 flowmasters (no cats).. and just recently installed new clutch quadrant( aluminum), clutch cable, new clutch stage 2 zoom, and steel bearing retainer. . also have a new flex fan up front ( dont think that really matters). ok, now for the first problem i have of about 10! lol.. ok, so going down the road in any gear when under load ( wont do it going downhill) at about 4 grand i get a sound from the engine bay that sounds like ball bearings being shaken in a steel can.. i was told that it may be crank bearings but im not too sure, now i do have a slight tap from the drivers rear valve cover, i imagine its just a rod tapping? i also was told that these 5.0's are pretty much bulletproof. which i have verified slightly because i literally run this car hard. (5200rpm) constantly. so needless to say im pretty brutal to it... i just need to get some opinions on what this sound may be. iw ould hate to be left stranded somewhere, so if i can get a definent (or somewhat near) answer ill just rip the thing apart and start upgrading... any help here would be awesome!! then i can introduce some more of my problems!

yep, detonation.....
needs to be checked asap before it grenades your engine. Oh and uh, I know we all love our fox bodies, some more than others, but don't treat her like a bit*h. Unless your engine is new, which it sounds llike it isn't, you're just pushing a rebuild up in the schedule.

I 3rd the notion of detonation! Rattle under load, 9 times out of 10 is detonation. What gas are u running 87? If so, burn it all out and run 93. Also, check your timing. It should be no higher than 14 degrees. Id set it to 10 just to verify its detonation, but im saying it is!!

i have yet to check the timing. and yes, i am running 87 octane..just filled er up too :( damn... friday after work i will be checking the timing.. along with installing a new tps sensor because she's throwing me some funky codes.. as soon as i check the timing, i will be getting back to you all, thanks for the help
!!! greatly appreciated!!.. and by the way, its very hard to not get into the pedal all the time when you got a car like a mustang!! lol this is my first mustang, had her for about a year.. and not to mention the fact that everyone in a halfway sporty car that sees my 5.0 wants to race and needless to say they all drive away disappointed!! smoked a porshe yesterday! ha

it was definently a 911. and honestly i dont know what im pushin as for horsepower. i know this mustang has alot more pull than most 5.0's ive been in.

ok. so i got a new tps sensor (nothing to do with this peticular problem) so i took both leads off the battery to reset the computer.. an hour later i get in the car, start cruising down the highway, and when i get on it now, theres no rattling sound.... which i found quite odd and which would pretty much verify the dentonation ( i think) since the car also resets timing..correct?

ok.. update here. I Finally checked the timing with the spout out. it was at about 20 DEG. BTC.... adjusted her to 13BTC, it idled like new but fell on its face when i tried to give it any gas ( spout out) and wehn i put the spout back in, it idled *****ty and ran beautifully. . after taking it down the freeway, there is no more detonation!! none whatsoever. thats everyone for the help.. greatly appreciated!! i am going to post another thread with another problem that i have with the tps.. go figure! lol

HAHA 20 degrees advanced and 87 octane?? Thatll cause pinging all day!! glad u got that squared away!

my car did the same thing right went i bougt it it was at like 18btdc so i set it at 10 btdc and ran all the fuel out then top it off with 93 and started adv the timing intill i had det then that put me at 13.5 btdc it does make i differents going from 10 to 13.5 with good fuel. :nice:

thanks for all the help! and even though the timing was way off it still ran pretty well, needless to say it runs even better, and the exhaust sounds quite different, more like a 5.0 should sound! another day, another lesson learned!
