I hate to ask this question about splitters.....

But as I am looking at what I want to do with my car over the long winter sleep, I am going to put a splitter on at last. Now I am reading that they are not really good for anything. I thought they helped the car handle and helped with gas mileage due to a smooth air flow. I am looking at adding a super charger, a roush suspension and a splitter. The car is going to be a daily driver and an auto cross vehicle. Am I wasting my money on a splitter? I am drawn to the gt500 style (I have a humble gt).
What do you think? I do like the look, but really wanted to stay functional.

Doc, they are for looks....that being said, most of the parasitic drag from air occurs under the car. If you look at race cars the nose is very close to the ground to diffuse wind drag and prevent lift....but they are going 200+ mph....Check out the new Boss it has what is supposed to be a functional "splitter". For your set up and uses u don't need one...then again my Roush looks great with one, lol.

What Roush suspension package r u getting?

Did u ever find a car for the kids?

Hi, thanks for your input. We are still looking for the auto cross car. We have come across a couple of projects, one that looked really sweet, but we couldn't find a garage that would let us keep it long enough to install the engine. I am going to check out a car this week. I am finding some nice cars, but I hate to see something nice get beat on. We also have a contact that goes to auto auctions, he is going to look out for a mustang for us. He is excited about the project. As you know we have this long winter, so we have time to look. I was letting some people use my car to auto cross with, but a couple really were rude about it...that nixed it for me! Now it will be a club car and the kids will have to contribute.
I'll keep you posted, we are excited about this!

I recently read a couple of quotes in Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords; one by Jay O'Connell who was the Chief Engineer at SVT during the development of the GT500.

"once the concept car's front end was redesigned to achieve upper and lower grille openings, it was discovered that the more aggressive design actually created a negative effect on aerodynamics. So engineers who had faced similar design versus air management issues during the development of the Ford GT simply went back to their lessons learned from that program and applied some of the same science to fix the problem without compromising a beautiful design. So the GT500's front splitter was designed quickly and efficiently to improve airflow while adding that desired purposeful look."

"To improve aerodynamics, Ford uses a front splitter, a rear diffuser, and the aforementioned decklid spoiler. O'Connell said the spoiler provided 200 pounds of downforce at 150 mph, and the combination of it and the front splitter has cut the total lift to zero. The final drag coefficient for the GT500 is .38, which is slightly higher than the [Ford] GT, but that is attributable to the wider tires."

I don't know if that applies in your situation but it seems the splitter (in combination) is effective at speeds well under 200 mph. Just my .02

Hi guys, thanks for your input. Mustang289 is your friend on presumscot renting space, a working or is it that unreal heated storage spot in portland? Have you seen any input on that?
We are looking (hopefully) at a car tomorrow. I don't know how he would be on the price. I have someone else looking out for me, that could get us a good deal. Waiting is the problem.
I will keep you posted. I am not sure which suspension I will go with, and I am between the roush tvs and edelbrock. Right now I am leaning towards the roush tvs, but I have heard such great things about installing the edelbrock myself. A few on the board have said that the install of the roush isn't bad. As I am looking at being thankful, I am amazed that these are "problems" I'm looking at!
Thanks guys,
Doc

garage

I think I know the space you are talking about, my father insures the building and the cars, he has a great collection...the place I'm talking about is Motortec, its owned by a good friend, most of his work is BMW but he loves Mustangs....If you ever need a hand I would call him.

Look at Roush M90, its on sale for 3900.00 right now, it puts out 435hp and with a CAI, a pulley and tensioner it puts out 500hp at the flywheel....tough to beat for the money. I have one on my car, great bang for the buck.

VMP tuning sells a tuner, pulleys and a CAI for 830 bucks...his tunes are supposed to be some of the best...he also tunes for the TVS with great results...the only thing I would caution you about is the TVS can push a stock motor to its limit easily and eventually you will want more power, so buying a forged short block might be a consideration. It never ends...soon u will be a modification addict with 700hp....:nice:

As far as suspension goes I would recommend a complete Roush stage 3 package with proper sized wheels, a big brake kit and adjustable shocks if you are going to race it. I have a Roush Stage 3 and it handles like its on rails and the ride quality is excellent.
