Hi all,

I am considering buying a 93 Mustang GT that has 12,000 original miles. The car is wearing it's original Goodyear Eagle ZR55, P225/55ZR16 tires (These were an "all season" factory option for these cars).

The Car has been stored in a garage for all it's life and kept out of the sun and elements. My 2 questions are:

1 - Are these tires still safe to drive on after 18 years assuming they are in good shape? (I only have pictures and have not visually inspected them for any cracking or dry rot). There appears to be plenty of tread left on the tires. I will need to drive on them between 600 and 1000 miles in the next 6 months to get the car home.

2 - If I were to replace them with a similar "all season" tires, what do you recommend?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Doug

No, 18-year old tires are not safe to drive on. Even though they may look ok, the rubber has deteriorated due to exposure to oxygen.

As far as I know, they still make that tire, but do you really intend on driving a 12K mile fox in the snow?

No, I'm definitely not going to drive her in the snow. I think the all seasons that were on her were more for "rain" concerns. I would never willingly put a Mustang into snow conditions.

Thanks for the info on the tires.

Keep it coming please.

Well, you don't need all seasons specifically for rain. Some of the best rain tires I have ever driven on were sport type tires.

But some good a/s tires I had on a mustang were yokahama avid w4s great rain tire but no traction with any power

Thanks Mustang5L5, "no traction" sounds no good to me.

I think I have established that I need to change the existing tires to new tires. It doesn't necessarily have to be "all seasons". That's just what is currently on the car. I was only thinking "all seasons" just to keep the tires more in line with what what original equipment on this car. The car is unaltered from new so it retains all of its factory equipment.

I would consider most anything in the tire world. It's been 15 years since I have owned a 5.0 GT and I am really unfamiliar with what is a good type of tire to put on.

I don't see much rain, but when we do get it, my tires seem to perform fine. The Fox isn't the best car to drive in the rain being so tail-light anyways. I have Kumho tires on 2 of my cars, a 5.0 & Acura, they both perform well in wet and tires seem to last. They are the ASX models.

I wouldn't want to drive that distance on tires that old.

What is your budget per tire?
I hadn't given a budget much thought. I guess what ever it takes. I have to admit that because the car was originally wearing Goodyear Eagles that I was considering going with a Goodyear Eagles again. I am a "keep her original" kinda person. I don't do mods on my cars.

I suppose if I had feedback from people telling me that "those suck" then maybe I would reconsider. So I guess I should ask, what do you all think of Goodyear Eagles as a replacement tire?

Thanks again.

If that is the case i would go with NT05's if money is no option. Superior rain tire with EXCELLENT dry performance.

Want to be famous? Well, at least in the Stang forums? :)

PLEASE, PLEASE measure the front and rear fender height.
If you take pictures of the tape measure, I'll even host the pictures.
Then, everyone will be able to reference the pictures and measurements as a baseline.

Good Luck!

I bought this car a couple of days ago but I was in such a rush to get home I didn't have a chance to measure the front and rear fender height. The car was immediately put in storage so I won't see her for at least 3 months but I will get some measurements and pm at that time so you can host the pictures.

I hope the pics will help and clear up any questions you have.

all seasons suck and i wouldnt put them on a sport/fast car. i live in cali tho and dont get snow or ice.

Summer only performance tires can be very dangerous in sub-40 degree temps. The colder it gets, the less traction they have. So they can easily break loose.

I remember when i had my 03 GT, i had summer tires on it. Was merging on the highway on a 15 degree morning under light acceleration. Hit 2nd and was rolling on the gas to move to the 2nd lane and the rear end just stepped out on a dry road. Fortunately the traction control kicked in and saved me, but i crapped my pants because had it been 60 degrees out the tires would have never broken loose under the light acceleration i was performing.
