FYI idea: dash tach without drilling

just wanted to share an idea that saved me from drilling through the dash pad

I used to have the tach hose clamped on the steering column, but wanted it up higher.

I bought a magnetic nail-picker-upper from harbor freight tools for $9.99, then made a metal bracket with a 90-degree angle

the magnet lets me move or remove the assembly, but is strong enough to keep from moving on the road

i accidentally removed the wrong ribs from the defrost vent (it was upside down when i cut the two middle ribs out) maybe ill get another at a swap meet and redo

Next step, is to buy a digital voltmeter (red LED) on the column, so the AFR and voltmeter are mounted similar to a rally-pac

in the future, i might go with a slightly larger tach with a shift light

Cool original idea, I would think that as long as there is metal under the dash pad (orignal or placed there) you could do the same thing anywhere on the dash?

I'm thinking I could use the flat area on my '67 dash where the rallypac would go. To be more stealth I would make your 'L' bracket a little taller and turn it forward so the magnet would be directly below the tach and then the wires would be the only thing behind the tach and put all the (slight) wt. of the tach directly over the magnet.

Thanks for a good idea, you could mount gauges almost anywhere with this idea! Now I'm thinking of temporary gauges on my console for vac, trans temp., etc.

Sorry, rallye pacs went under the dash in '67 I believe I was thinking of the 2 gauge pods I thought I had seen for the valley in the middle of the dash.
