I'm not too familiar with these motors, spend more time taking them out and putting 5.0's in their place than trying to repair them.... but I just bought my mom a 92 LX hatch to drive my kids to school in. I bought it off a high school kid who replaced the plug wires and the thermostat and then the car would not fire. I checked plug wire locations and they were ok. When you crank the motor, the tach seems to be kind of sporadic. sometimes it reads almost 1000rpms while cranking, but its jumping all over the place.

The car has been sitting since at least september. I tried spraying starting fluid in the TB and it doesn't even act like it wants to fire.

Ignition control module? Any other ideas? Thanks

i vote for the icm module - when mine went bad the tach did funky things - could also have bad coil packs too. one pack may have een dead for a long time an the other mighta fried when he changed them over. swap coil pack positions and see if the engine fires - sometimes once side of the ICM kinda works - and it may be that the icm may work on the one side that has a bad coil pack.....

Any 91 to 93 icm from 2.3 a mustang will work, also any of the 92-98ish Ford rangers with the 2.3 have the same icm and coil pack setup.

If the tach is working strangely I would vote for the ICM is bad. Go to you local junkyard and harvest one off a ford ranger, then go to Radio Shack and get a tube of white conductive jelly.

They are only mounted by three screws in spite of the fact there are 4 holes on the module. Take the 3 screws from the salvage yard (9/32" heads). use the best 3 from the six you have, clean and block-sand the mounting surface, and then install the recovered module.

If you are in a hurry and want to be 100% sure, shell out the $120 like I did an purchase a brand new one.
