Supercharger Questions

Got my Paxton kit in the mail the other day and after looking at the set up, it looks like I will be able to keep my Alt low on the passenger side and all I'll have to do is make a tensioner bar for the Alt. I can use the smog pump area as a point of anchoring for this bracket. Should be a straight forward project, because I don't run PS or AC. Now just gotta get the balancer and new pulleys.

If you are planning to go carb'd be ready to replace your carb also. If your is vac. secondary it will not work as well as a true blow through carb. Demon has them now and I have had great luck with mine other than not being able to get the fuel level high enough on the primary side:shrug:

If you're refering to my set up, No I run the Pro FLo EFI set up.

Paxton

I will call them thank you I never thought of that it may work.

The carb I'll change if I have to how much does one of those cost and what makes it better ( I know I have a lot to learn) and are there any other things that need to be changed to do this? I'm no stranger to making mistakes I've had many so far I wish I had someone to help but not where I live!

Your carb can be modded for blow thru but the best way to handle this is to buy a carb designed specifically for supercharged applications (or go EFI). Carbs use the vacuum of the engine to deterine fuel requirments as it draws air through it but you change everything when you introduce boost. At that point you are forcing air into the carb. They are also be dangerous as the fuel can leak out of the throttle shafts among other places this is made worse by the fact that with a S/C you need a more advanced fuel system (Boost referenced regulator is a must) which will then be feeding that leak/fire. I wouldnt want to talk you out of it because I am totally happy with mine but its not a bolt it up and go system and requires adjustments from time to time.

Ok so I just wanted to update this thread, because it may help others in the future. I'm gonna give a run through of what I went through and the parts needed to make the 87-93 model paxton work on your classic without spending the high price on the paxton classic model kit.

Ok first off it's a 289/302 with the Edelbrock Proflo EFi system, only accessories are alt and wp.
1. Bought a nib, 87-93 model paxton kit new on ebay, i waited until the price was right. You can save a bunch of money on this part.
2. Bought all march serpentine pulleys (alt and WP)
3. Bought a 4 bold race dampner so the supplied paxton pulley would fit.
4. Bought an electric fan because of clearence issues.
5. I'm running 10.5:1 compression, with aluminum heads, so I bought a 8 lb rad cap, to save some Headgasket life.
6. bought a battery reloaction kit.
7. Bought one stage colder plugs, but ended up putting in the originals back in, and it ran much better.
8. Decided to use the stock paxton FMU, but will be getting a different unit because It's running way to rich under boost. I should be running a 8:1 and not the stock 12:1 unit.
9. I changed out my PCV valve to the 03 cobra model.
10. On the paxton mounting bracket i put my alt where the smog pump would have went and chopped up the paxton bracket so it looked like it came from the factory that way.
11. Had to extend my original alt adjuting bar, because i changed the original location of the alt. You will need to measure your new serp belt size and go pick one up at any parts store.
12. I bought a new oil flexible dipstick because the bracket was in the way, so you'll need the flexibility to make it work.
13. You'll have to shim out the wp pulley by about one washer width to align the pullies.
14. Follow paxtons instructions and Everything should bolt right up with out a problem. You can use the stock supercharger to bonnet (you need to buy a bonnet) tube and you can use the air cleaner provided, as well.
15. You will need to play with your timing, when you're done. and you should be good to go.

I took my time on this project and I completed it over winter/early spring. I get lots of compliments about the way it turned out.

Power is not a problem now. At only 5lbs of boost (gauge hit 8lbs) with the 10.5 compression, she hauls a$$, as well as sounds sweet with that soft whistle under the hood. Unfortunitely I need a new T5 because after one summer, I grind going into 4th and 2nd wants to jump out all the time now. SO the new T5 will be this winters project. I'm also taking everything back apart and having everything powdercoated.

The car is packed away right now but I'll see if I can't some pics eventually.
Please feel free to ask any questions. Now that I've done it I can surely lead you in the right direction.

(imho)
Do not run an FMU.

Buy a good quality fuel pump which can supply the needed volume, buy a good set of injectors that can keep up with the desired hp output... and then let the Pro-Flow do it's job.

Also don't waste another penny on a t5, save a little longer and put a tremec in it ONCE and be done.

.02 form the cheap seats,
:nice:

I was thinking about upgrading the injectors and FP, I may still do that :nice:.
The problem with a tremec in the 65-66 is that the tunnel is to small and you'll have to do some messaging of the tunnel, which I want to avoid, at this time.
Thanks
Matt

If you decide to upgrade your fuel pump let me know. I have a TRex Vortech pump that has been feeding my blown 302 with a little over 400 at the wheels for the past 1000 miles. I am selling it because I had to jump up to an Aeromotive A1000 to feed my new big breathing blown 331. PM if you want to talk.

It looks like you made some nice progress! Nothing like the feeling of being thrown into your seat by boost!

i believe member "2bav8" put a TREMEC 6-spd into his '65/66 coupe... he has a website... he mentioned he dropped the tranny a bit, so the tunnel would clear... drive-train pinion angle would change, so i don't know anything about that stuff.

EDIT: forget the website... GeoCities is no more.

i've put a tko-600 with no problem a little massaging but i've had to massage most parts of this car for things to fit anyway.. i really like it. just make sure you get a clutch that will hold up to whatever your application is.

i have a question guys.. i put a powerdyne SC on my car and everything goes great for it except it smokes when i start it.. its a blue smoke and me and my brother n law have dun everything we knoew to fix it we have went over everything? any ideas?

YSI fits, but just barely in a 65.

Sounds like you're burning oil. Sounds like it goes away after start up correct?

I know this is an old thread but there is some great advice given, and i have learned a lot through the process.

I ditched the FMU and went with 42lb injectors, with a large inline fuel pump as well as updated to Dart block 347, after blowing out 2 cylinders of my 289. The 347 is built for the SC application, 8.8:1 compression and all forged internals. This new set up runs like a champ and if I can relay anything to everyone doing a supercharger install is to go ahead and upgrade your fuel system and to not go with the FMU.

i have a 98 3.8 ..i bought it with the m90 sc already on it...i dont thing much was changed like fuel pump/heads...etc....do you think my pony is going to give out..it runs fine right now
