How to Change Convertible Top on Ford Mustang | eHow.com

Any guides better than that one?

The article was also unclear about the part right under the convertible window. That should come in the kit too right?

Also, is the back window reusable?? I took mine to a shop and they said it wouldnt be, but im skeptical. They wanted me to buy brand new everything (top, liner, weatherstripping, window etc...) when only my top really needs done.

Getting ready for a spring project. Any pointers would definitely help. Thanks.

Ebay DVD is awesome. You need a top, rear glass, pads, cables and tacking strip from the pads. Just buy all that new and it will make your life easier. I got mine off im waiting for warmth to put the windshield and top back on.

Everyone thanks for the tips!!

Adam, is there any difference between buying the rear glass new and reusing the one I already have? Its in great shape. No dings or scratches, and the defroster still works.

You're in Burlington NJ, not too far from me over here in Bucks county north of Philly. Wanna come help me? :D

The rear window does not need to be replaced unless you are changing the color of the top. The glass is bonded to a skirt that is fitted during the install. A slight difference in the fabric finish may or may not matter but if you are installing the same type of top for sure use the old one.

Help me understand why it would matter about a color change, because I planned on going from tan to black. Eventually the car is going to get painted black as well.

Right now the glass started to come apart from the liner and is actually out of the car. The glass is actually in my closet and from what I can tell there is nothing on the glass that would indicate what color top it belonged to.

Is the skirt you mention what I pointed out in this picture?:

Does this come with a convertible replacement kit?

Yes, that's the skirt and it is bonded to the glass and as such is not part of the top replacement kit. So, if you plan on changing the color, you need to change the glass so the color matches the new top.

Adam where did you buy yours?

Also, I just got a quote from a local place for $710 installed. That sounds good to me what do you guys think?

Obviously I will ask, but should I assume that quoted price would include the back glass?

Lastly, is there any reason for me to buy my own top etc and bring it to them vs leaving it all to them?

Leave it to them if your going to let them do labor. If you don't their work wont be guaranteed. My top is an easy on brand and I've heard good things about fitment. It was a Craig's list find with all new lines and pads including heated back glass for $125.... some Guy got evicted and the dude cleaning out the place was a mustang Guy and instead of throwing it away sold it off.
