I have an 06 GT Conv with only 24,000 miles on it. I don't drive it much but I really love the car and would rather have a manual transmission than the automatic that's in it. I have a few questions I hope you can help me with.

1. Is this a conversion that most dealers can/will do or do I need to go to a specialty shop?

2. If I have it done, what are the chances that it will be reliable afterwards?

3. I know it will be expensive, but any idea of about how much a top notch job like this will cost?

It will be extremely expensive because why would you bother to put in a stock 5spd. I would go with the new full length 6spd from JPC racing. They handle 700 lbs of torque and eliminate the remote shifter. So trans, clutch assembly, clutch hydraulics, flywheel, drive shaft etc.... will run you some big bucks. The only thing I'm not 100% sure on is if you need a new PCM or you can just leave the factory one in.

My answers, never done a 5 speed swap on a newer vehicle but I had all my research done on swapping a 5 speed into a 08 Focus, and

1. You'll be hard pressed to find a specialty shop to do this at a cost that you'd want to pay and a dealer will not touch it.

2. If its done right it could be as reliable as if it came with a 5 speed.

3. Hard parts for a Focus swap cost $1500, including a used transaxle, the swap I was planning was NOT a "top-notch" swap. Reliablity would have been an issue till the bugs got worked out, but I was planning on spending up to $3000. All work done by me. A "top notch" job, as in factory fit and finish, and work not done by you, I'd guesstimate upwards of $6-7K, with used parts, could be cresting $10K with new.

Check out the How-To sticky at the top on this section to see whats involved.

it is nearly impossible to find a dealer or shop willing to take on such a task. I did this swap this past thanksgiving and spent around $2200. If you do find a shop willing to do it you're looking around $7000. The only used part i bought was the PCM and tranny, everything else was brand new. If you decide to take the plunge I'd be willing to answer any questions you have.
And it's definitely worth it!

Anthony has already done this swap, and done a nice writeup on it.

I'm also looking into doing a trans swap, I just don't know whehter it will be a 6 speed Tremac, or a manual shift 4R70W with a trans brake. The old internal (ET vs streetability) debate ... argggh!

definitely go with the 6 speed. Its just more fun to drive :) Anthoy's write is very helpfull ( i used it) but it's not all inclusive. I did weeks of research to make sure i had everything i needed and went over and over every detail.
