This is kind of long, but I REALLY need to rant. For the past week or two my clutch has been messed up. A friend told me it was my clutch cable. Got the part but I've been having a hard time getting my mechanic to fix it because he's always busy.

Drove my car to school today. Got into town and went to shift into fourth. All the sudden I heard a loud pop, it slipped out of gear and starting making this ungodly loud tapping noise. Great. I thought my clutch cable broke. Got towed to the nearest garage. $65 for towing, less than 10 miles. But I didn't complain. It was worth it.

Got to the garage before they opened, so I sat outside for about ten minutes and waited. Finally they get it in. It blew a spark plug out and stripped the thread. The car always had an exhause leak but when the spark plug blew out it like caused a bigger hole I guess. So both things were fixted and it was only $275. The place was excellent and I'm not being sarcastic. Everyone was professional, they did good work, they were fast, they were cheap, and they were all really nice. While I was waiting I jogged to school, 6 lanes of traffic = bad idea.

So that problem was fixed. But the clutch was still messed up. Grinding gears, popping out of gear, not going in gear, etc. I went home, and called every repair shop to see if anywhere could fix it today. Only one place, I went to check it out. When I got there the guy pulled out my part to make sure I got the right thing. Really dude, it's not rocket science. The way he decided it was right? It looked long enough. He burnt his hand on my motor while "measuring". I was freaking out but let them look at it.

An older man drove it to the back. He stalled out THREE times! I was like do yall want me to drive it back there?! Then the guy tells me its the entire clutch and it's gonna cost me $875. I was like I'm gonna need to go home now. The older guy comes in and asks me "do you have another set of keys?". They dropped the keys under the hood, locked the doors, and shut the hood. WTF. They get that worked out and I leave. Pulled out on the road and guess what, MY ****ING HOOD FLYS UP. The dumbass didn't close it properly. I closed it, wipped the car around and headed back to the garage. I explained to everyone standing there that the ******* mechanic didn't shut my hood and it flew up. I explained the proper way to shut a hood. I told them I would drive my car into the ground before I ever let them touch it. I told them to kiss my ass. I walked out and not one person opened their mouth the entire time.

In all fairness I wasn't going fast enough for it to actually "fly up", but it did pop up and go in the air. I feel sure they shut it and tried to push down rather than letting it drop shut. Whatever, I've never had a mechanic not know how to shut my hood. Really, what is this world coming to?! Almost $400 later and I STILL can't drive my car. :bs: FML.

Could always be worst, you could not have a car at all.

Indeed.

My ex actually said he'd help me sell the car after today. I was like wtf?! Even if my car needs a new clutch, why would I sell it? Selling a car everytime something happens to it is just stupid. It's not like I have anything else to spend my money on anyway...

I've had a wheel almost fall off leaving a shop after an inspection. Turn out they didn't torque down my lugs on the RR. Complete BS.

It's always worth waiting for a good, reputable shop to work on your car. Especially the more in depth repairs. I think the guy burning his hands on your motor should have been enough to know it was time to leave.

Yep. Gonna take my car to the mechanic that's always worked on my cars who is amazing but expensive as hell. If he says it is indeed the clutch, I believe I'll take it back to the people that worked on it the other day and see what type of price I'm looking at. I feel like they would get it done a lot quicker for a lot less since it's a much bigger garage than the place I normally go to, which only has one mechanic.

I'd be able to get the car fixed if it is the clutch, but that means my plans for it will be on the back burner for a while. No spring break, no Mustang Week. :( Hope for something cheap!

Hope it gets taken care of soon. Mechanics like that are why I learned how to fix everything myself. I hate idiots like that.

Oh well, could be worse. Could be driving a F-body! :rlaugh:

Alright so I took the car back to the place that fixed the spark plug. It was the clutch cable. Apparently the last owner replaced the clutch ajuster thing but the clutch cable wasn't an ajustable one. Something like that. They fixed it. $360 later and the car was running awesome, way better than when I first got it. They told me the bad news was that the transmission is going to need to be replaced soon.

Drove the car to town today, and it started whining really loud, then whenever I'd stop it'd shut off like it didn't have any gas. When I got to the place I was going, I turned it off. My friend wanted to hear how it sounded so I cranked it back up and it was still making the noise but it was also smoking like crazy. I cut the car off and let it sit for a while. When I drove it back home it ran totally normal again. I guess I'm taking BACK to the garage again next week.

I'm seriously considering changing majors to mechanic. I'm gettting burned with this car. I've spent almost $800 in the past week and it's still messed up. :notnice:

Only thing I can think of is that they made the clutch cable too tight, therefore the clutch is not completely engaged. This would burn your clutch up very fast, and may create the smoke you saw.

Do you know what it smell like? Once you smell a clutch burning, you will be able to remember the distinct smell.

Sounds like they "helped" your transmission need replacing. Unless they took it apart, or drained the fluid and saw a bunch of metal shavings, or it's noticeably physically damaged (like if the input shaft is twisted, missing teeth, has excessive play) there's no magic way to tell it needs replacing.

If it was loose and sloppy, or grinded when you shifted, then ok... but if it went in fine aside from your clutch issue, something isn't right there. There a different place you can take it? I'd first go back to that shop and let them correct the situation IF it's a problem caused by their work. If you're not happy with what they tell you, take it to a different shop and get a second opinion. If the second shop says that the issue was likely caused by an improper installation, etc., get a written report stating that and explain to the first shop you feel like you're getting hosed.
