Installing new Fel-Pro intake gasket on my 289 engine

I got my new gasket set (Fel-Pro) to install my OE intake manifold back on my 65 289 engine but I thought it would show which side goes up and which side goes down. Like "this side up" but does not show that. How do you know which side goes up> or does it make a difference? Thanks, John

I dont think it matters on the intakes, I never seen any before. Just make sure the gasket doesnt block any of the ports.

I use a little bit of silicon gasket maker to hold the gasket to the head while I set he intake down. Its NOT to seal the gasket, just to hold it in place.

I have had good luck by using fel pros cork end seals with the adhesive on them. Set them on the block, these you may have to trim the ends. Put a large pea sized ball of silicon on the ends of the cork where they meet the intake gasket, then set the manifold straight down.

You can also throw the cork end seals away and use a bead of silicon across as well.

Yes, I have heard that most of the professionals do not even use the end seals but just use RTV (I think that is what it is called) on the ends then let it set up till it does not stick to fingures and ready to go. So it really makes no difference which end of the gasket is up?

shouldn't..Just make sure that the gasket doesn't block any of the ports. If it does, its most likely the wrong gasket.

set the gasket on, line all the holes up.. verify it doesn't block any of the ports.

I was told one side goes up and one side goes down but he was not sure and thought the smooth side went down. I just do not want to do this wrong and have to take it back off. Surely someone on her has installed an intake manifold befor.

I have many times.. never seen a top or bottom, forward or aft. Just made sure that the gasket didnt block any of the ports on the head.

Head gaskets have a front and back.. but never seen a distinction on intake gaskets.

specifically what gaskets are you using?

Here is a picture from amazon..

The gasket at the top of the pic is for the passenger side. The left edge of the pic is the front of the engine. This is how they go on.
