how do I separate the steering column and steering box

i have a 65 mustang with stock steering column and box how do i seperate them?

I'm assuming you mean, how do you remove the shaft from the box. The column is the housing around the shaft, inside the car. The shaft on the early Mustangs is part of the steering box and not separatable.

1) Remove steering wheel, upper bearing spring, and centering cone
2) Disconnect column wiring harness
3) Remove U-strap connecting steering column to dash
4) Pull on steering column

Or if you have no plans on reusing the box cut the shaft off to make removing it easier. With my headers that was my only option when converting to the Borgeson Box.

That's about the easiest way. I did the same when I converted over to the FR box.

I had the same problem during my conversion to Borgeson. The instructions say "remove steering column". There is a rubber plug in the end of the column that fits over the steering box. After so many years, it was very stuck. I put a bar between the box and the end of the column and pried. Once I got it to move, I was able to just pull it off.
As noted above, the shaft is part of the box and will not separate. I had the motor out when I did it, so once the column was off, it was easy to take the box out with the shaft still attached. I'm not sure it would be possible with the motor in with out a lot of effort, if at all.

Cutting the shaft and destroying the core value of the box is overkill. I have removed any number of gearboxes with the engine installed. Simply by removing the column, driver's seat, LH valve cover, pitman arm, #7&8 spark plugs, and the LH cowl brace, the box comes right out.

If you are returning them to Borgeson, they will (or did a few months ago. Call to confirm) take them back if you cut the shaft, leaving several inches.
