Came up on a deal the other day, im not real real motor savy as far as high perf. goes. A buddy has a npi block in his older sn95, wants to trade blocks. I get the npi block, keep my pi heads, get 270 cams. edelbrock intake manifold. intake plenum throttle body lt's, or/h and a catback. Obviously my compression would go up quite a bit. But is this swap a good idea? theres something about going back in time that doesnt settle quite right with me. I already have shorties catted x and weld ins. What do you guys think.

For all the work involved in swapping engines, I'd instead recommend finding a Mark VIII engine (can be found for around $300). The pistons on the Mark VIII engine only had a 3 cc dish, and you'd have over 11:1 compression with PI heads. That would make for a nasty N/A combo. If you really felt like going all out, you could remove the pistons and have valve reliefs cut into them. That way you'd be able to run an aggressive cam and not worry about PTV contact. The other added benefit of course would be the weight reduction. IIRC the Mark VIII engine weighs roughly 65lbs less than the iron 4.6 block.

True, I get the whole deal installed for 1800 bucks. parts and labor all inclusive. i forgot the 90mm maf too. along with a tubular kmember. i called a shop to see about just cams for my stock motor which has 90k miles on it btw. they wanted 800 to install and degree. cams cost about 500. so in my head it seems like im getting a lot of bang for the buck. i plan on running spray anyways. this motor only has 60k on it. Pistons are already notched for no ptv contact. Sorry i forgot to mention some stuff. He has hook ups and ill get a free dyno tune with it.

he has a 96 or 97 gt he just got in and wants to revert back to stock to sell it. Dude owns a homegrown speed shop basically. Always has a minimum of 3 or 4 mustangs hes working on. We're both military so its not like he can go to far if something goes wrong. Ive known him for about a year or so. Everybody talks about him he built a tt 2v not too long ago. The good part is i get to keep my exhaust set up and any performance parts i bought. So i could probably end up selling my exhaust set up locally and cut the cost down to almost nothing. Those catted x pipes are not cheap.

I'll play devil's advocate. Suppose this guy gets your car together, you fire it up and BAM PTV contact resulting in damage to your heads. Or suppose something is missed upon reassembly while installing the engine. Is this guy willing to fix it after the fact? Are you planning on being there to assist?

The reason I ask is I am already hesitant to take my car to a dealership or to a local shop even when I know the management or the staff working on the cars. Reason being I don't really trust anyone else to work on my car. Perhaps I'm paranoid, but at least if you had the work done at a reputable shop or dealership you could rest easy knowing they stand behind their work. If this guy is doing this for you on the side and something goes wrong do you have the funds available to pay for it to be corrected if he is unwilling to do so? Somethings you should think about before going forward IMO.

Perhaps you could talk to him and iron out all of these details first. Develop some kind of agreement together, ideally in writing, so that if something did go wrong he'd be obligated to fix it.

Yeah, I've taken into account all of this. My main concern is it worth it as far as power goes. I don't doubt his work or his ability to do it. the pistons are already notched and the npi in the car has the pi heads already. so PTV contact is a very unlikely scenario. I know where your coming from though and i appreciate your response. I think its a hell of a deal for 1800. parts alone its worth that. So i think...
