Hi,

I am hoping someone can help shed some light on a recent problem I have encountered.

I have a 1999 Mustang that is a V6 automatic with just under 60,000 miles. When I recently shifted the car into drive the engine revved, almost like I was in neutral, and I couldn't drive. When I shifted my car into reverse, my car went in reverse. I then shifted back to park and then back to drive, and then was able to drive. After this first encounter I have had this problem on and off (sometimes the car is find after I shift to drive and other times I have to go back and forth between drive and park before it will slip into drive).

Has anyone encountered anything like this or know what the problem could be? Any troubleshooting tips or other tips?

Thanks!

Have it checked

With a helper , put the car in reverse and see if the reverse lights come on.

If they don't the prindle , the black plastic devise on the driver’s side of the transmission could be bad or out of adjustment. It has a large plug going to it.
Sometimes the car may or may not start in park or WILL start in drive, reverse too.

Has anything happened recently, like ran over something or had any work done on the car?

Any check engine lights or TCC codes?

Some shops(transmission) will do a free diagnostic or check on it.

Or consider the Ford dealer doing a diagnostic too.

The longer you drive it the more expensive it will be to fix it. Something small now could become major if a small malfunction or problem persists.
