So I'm 28 years old now, and I've been stangless for 2 years. Hit some rough times financially and had to sell all the last toy I had a while back (cars in signature) and get a POS beater mountaineer. Well now that is falling apart on me and I've been getting sick of paying close to $80 a week in gas to fill it...

I of course would LOVE to have my shelby back, or even one of the new 5.0 GTs. And even though they'd beat my Mountaineers 18mpg, I dont think I can swing the payments still.

BUT.....i will tell you that those 305hp V6 Mustangs making 31mpg sure did catch my eye recently.

Am I getting to old? Looking at MPGs over horsepower? hahahaha Any v6 owners out there down a similar road I'm on?

There is a lot to be said for the sanity of actually enjoying your car. Makes work a lot better. The new V6's are really good. Go test drive one then test drive a new 5.0. I bet there will be huge savings for 4th of July weekend... Thousands off...
 
28 is too old... for what? Sorry to hear about your tough times, lot of that going around these days. There is no shame to the new v6 stang. It's a great engine and a nice handling car. Hope things turn around soon. GOOD LUCK!
 
You're not getting too old, man...but when we start seeing mounting gas charges, we start wondering how we can save a little. We get what we pay for (in my case a car that's tuned for 93), so I take the Metro to work (doesn't hurt that I'm subsidized).

I'm not complaining. I do drive to work on Fridays, and also on the weekends, to the track, on road trips, etc.

Not too old, fella...just more conscious of things as we get older. Not a bad thing.
 
The new v6s are great cars but even my 07 GT gets not so bad gas mileage. The last 2 fill ups I got 21mpg split city and highway. That is having fun with the car and not driving like a grandma. I think I could get 27mpg all highway. I noticed the increase in mpg after putting in the aluminum driveshaft and catted x pipe. Before those mods I was getting 17-19mpg.

I am not sorry I got the V6, For DD, its a lot of fun, looks killer and so far the mileage is as good as the 4cyl. Accord Coupe it replaced. My son in law just got his silver/base V6 2011 auto and loves it. Go give one a drive.......
 
I'm pretty sold on these V6s. And since its been 2-3 years now since ove driven/owned my shelby and terminator, I'm not to worried about feeling like the V6 will have no balls. So I'm going saturday to test drive these bad boys!
 
I last had a 2001 GT that I traded in 4 years ago. I traded to an SUV. I am now getting back into a Mustang. I drove the V6 and the GT. The V6 blew my old 'stang away. True that my '01 wasn't a previous Shelby or a terminator Cobra but I was not disappointed with the V6.

That being said, the V8 was just INTOXICATING. I was looking at a v6 vert or v8 coupe and after a lot of agonizing I went with the GT.

Hahaha good choice man =) I'm unfortunately broke and can't really afford the probably ultra high GT payments. Not to mention what comes along with owning a GT.....the 'mod bug'. I've been down that road before. Best of luck to you :nice:

My friend's husband is one of the higherup CEOs with ford and i MAY be able to get my hands on an Xplan PIN. In which case we'll have to see what that does with the V6 vs GT prices for me.
 
There's nothing wrong with MPG consciousness. Gas is flirting with $4/gallon, so when you start eating less so you can pay for gas to get to work, something needs to be done. Plus, smaller engines are lighter, so you get the maneuverability bonus.

Heck, Ford's even kicking around the idea of Ecoboosting the 2014 model, which, in my rather inexperienced opinion, would be awesome. The first factory turbo Mustang since the SVO.
 
Join Mustang Club of America and you can easily get an X plan number.

+1. A friend of mine from work called me two days ago to ask about buying a Mustang. He was just looking for a base V6.

I told him to join MCA to get X-plan and order a brochure from Ford so he got the $750 private cash coupon electronically via email. Couple that with the current $500 customer cash rebate and you can save some serious dough.

So by the end of the weekend I think he will have a 2012 base V6 auto and be somewhere in the realm of $22.5k-23k OTD.

Yes, I've already been struck with this and had to calm myself down. I don't have a car yet and had about $2000 worth of plans not because I need anything but because I *think* I need it.

I put a moratorium on car part ordering until August. I have a Barton shifter bracket that I'll put on and window tint will go on the day after I take delivery but that's it. :)

Good luck and I hope you do end up with a car -- you really can't go wrong with any of these cars!
 
Yeah the only thing worse than the bug bite is the snake bite! When I bought my shelby, I had ordered mods a weekend before I drove from nj to ohio to pick the car up, so that when I got home I was already installing mods the next day. Hahaha
 
I have both a mountaineer and a mustang so I can relate on the parts and gas for the mountaineer. Not drove the stang for two years due to repairs needed and financial issues. Luckily things are turning around for me. Got tires and inspection yesterday, clutch parts turn up today so hopefully next week I will be back on the road again (dusted a Camaro yesterday - couldnt resist).
That said having not driven for 2 years thats 20,000 less miles than I would have racked up. The mountaineer has taken a lot of repairs though, 2 sets of wheel bearings, all suspension goodies, 2 sets of sway bar links, 2 sets of brakes, exhaust, etc, etc. Will still be my DD though.
I ALWAYS KNOW I HAVE A MUSTANG AT HOME!!!
 
It doesn't sound like you can afford either a new V6 or GT, you said it yourself you are broke. 25-26 year olds don't need $40k+ Shelby GT500s or $25k terminators with thousands in mods, nor do they need $30k new cars either; living above your means is probably what got you in trouble the first time, and if you are still broke, why repeat the same mistake? As a 27 year old chemical engineer, I certainly know there isn't any way in hell I could afford a GT500. Approved for it based on income and credit score? Sure, but could I afford it? No. Instead I've got a beautiful '98 GT.

Just get yourself a later new edge or early S-197 with decent miles for a good price and be happy. Then you can get a car that isn't falling apart, but isn't a bank breaker either. You could get a decent early S-197 for probably $15k (I haven't looked). Put together a $3-$4k downpayment and you could knock the loan out in three years.

I don't mean to sound harsh but remember, you don't get rich by writing checks. Buying a new Mustang now is no better than the terminator or Shelby you had before, and you will just wind up in the same screwed boat later. Good luck with whatever you decide.
 
I have a 94 Z28 with a few mods just to give some perspective on what I am about to say.
I bought my 2008 GO Mustang about 6 months ago with 34K for 13 thousand. It is a V6 manual. I loved how it looked but was worried it would be a dog and not be able to get out of its own way. Well long story short I should not have been worried. This car has more than enough to keep me satisfied. It won't beat my Camaro but it is a very fun semi daily driver and it seems everyone drools over the car. My Camaro never gets a quarter of the compliments the Mustang does. Don't be hesitant about the V6, its a nice motor that gets the job done. The car is still plenty fast enough to get you in trouble. :D
