best cure for skip during midcorner bumps

This is without question the most annoying aspect of driving my 07 GT (20K miles) - that nasty little side-skip that the rear-end does when you hit a bump going thru a corner. I can rip through a corner in my bone-stock 06 Acura TL with more confidence than the stang and that's gotta change. I know it's inherent to the live-axle setup but I gotta do something about it. I checked a local performance shop and they recommended replacing the lower control arms on the rear. I did a little research and everything I find says that those control arms are good for reducing wheel-hop but I don't see anything mentioning they help the "skip". I see some have used the panhard bar to reduce the skip but that is for lowered cars, correct? My car isn't lowered (yet) so now I'm confused. Any ideas/experience on the subject would be appreciated....

Nothing is going to ever eliminate the "skip". The point is to limit the travel of the axle so even though it "skips" the vehicle is controlable and she pops right back into place, my vehicle is very stable through corners even with a very rough road surface. You can add lower control arms and Panhard bar even though you're not lowered.

I want you to be completely comfortable tearing up corners in your 'stang. If you are considering doing any mods, you may want to check out Ford Racing Parts. These parts are Ford approved meeting our standards of reliability and durability. A Limited Warranty is available for some select parts as well. Just a suggestion for you to keep in mind. :)

I replaced the panhard bar and brace for a minor improvement.

Then, I added the J&M "street" LCA's which made a MAJOR improvement in the situation you describe. I assume the "poly ball" bushings prevent binding. Incidentally, there was no noticeable increase in NVH. I strongly recommend this mod.
 
The latest yesterday from the Ford rumor mill is that the 2014 will have IRS, which would be helpful, but slightly blasphemous, maybe.

But then, they also said the there would be an Ecoboost "SVO" option, so we'll see.

Not a rumor it will be IRS. The Mustang is the only Ford on it's own chassis and is way too expensive so it will share one next gen with the Australian Falcon. Ford also has stated the Mustang will continue with it's unique look themed after the 60's cars and will not go to the standard Ford "3 bar" grille or "kinetic" design. There will also be a competition between Ford U.S. and Ford Aus. to see who's Mustang design will be chosen

Yes they are considering an SVO type model that will feature EcoBoost and yes it will be a 4cyl GDI Turbo if they green light it.

I see - so the performance shop guys weren't pulling my leg after all - good to know. I'm going to have to plan this out carefully because I think my rear shocks are going - at 20K miles!!! Feels like something is jostling around in the trunk whenever I go over a bump and I also hear a squeak when I go over bumps. I hear the OEM shocks on the stang are pretty shoddy, so my suspicion is that mine are going. Now I have to decide if I want to lower the car (probably) and by how much and then decide on the panhard bar/LCAs etc.. Decisions, decisions.... and $$$.

I ran my '06 GT at Sebring International Raceway last week. The surface at Sebring is ROUGH. We actually added one mod before each track session to see how it would affect the overall balance and handling of the car.

Installing the lower control arms dramatically reduced some of the nonsense that the car exhibited in bumpy corners, and even in smooth sections with rapid left right transitions. I suspect that the Watts link will tighten it up even more, but that'll be another track test for another day.

In short, the shop was right, good quality LCAs will stabilize the car in the corners.
 
OK - so I'm going to start off with the LCAs. The skip is horrendous and appears to be getting worse. Now the next questions are - which ones and how much for the parts/install? The shop I went to suggested Steeda LCAs for $299 and about $75 to install. That part price seemed a bit steep to me.

Other issue is how I'm going to sneak this mod past wifey, but I gotta firgure that out on my own. She barely blessed the new 19" staggered wheels and front-to-back vinyl stripes - AND I still need tint!!! She's gonna kill me....

Side note - I'm so jealous of Floridians - here in NYC the roads suck all year round (reason for 19s and not 20s), and come winter the stang just sits in the driveway :(

I think that shop was padding the parts price a little...

Anyway, there are several good quality control arms out there. Of course I'm partial to UPR Products (I work there) but either way, you'll be pleased when you upgrade your control arms. They made a day and night difference on my car. :nice:
 
Is that "noise like something is bouncing around in the trunk" typical on '07s? Mine is doing the same thing. The previous owner did something to the suspension cause the car rides lower, there is 0 roll through hard turns, and the car feels like its glued to the road. So I thought the noise was due to the suspension job....
 
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned going to a high quality set of dampers like the Koni Sports and Tokico D-specs. With proper compression/rebound damping, they should help immensly with keeping the car planted over bumps.
 
Parchisi, your right, high quality dampers would help. However the factory Lca's and bushings are so weak that imho opinion they have to be addressed 1st.

As far as irs in the 2014, it probably will have it, however just because it will share platforms with the Aussy Falcon which has irs doesn't mean its a 100% certainty. Remember the s197 is a modified Lincoln LS platform and the LS had irs and as we all know the Mustang doesn't.
