the chip fell out of my only key (it was cracked) and i cant find the insert.

is there any way to program a new one without towing the car to the stealership?

without it the car will crank but will not start.

the website guide calls for 2 working keys?

Depends upon the model year. On the 96-98's there is a user procedure to reprogram with only 1 key. It takes 45 minutes.

The 99-04 MY is more restrictive. For the user to program, need 2 working keys.

Most lock smiths will come to your home. They have the tools to re-program a new key. This avoids the cost of the tow.

PATS can be disabled with a hand held tuner.

Otherwise, it's off to the dealer.

Like said above, PATS can be disabled with a tuner. However, the Theft light will flash constantly every time you start the car.

Locksmiths can CLONE your existing key onto a new blank. That key will be an exact copy of your old key and will work exactly like that original key. However, it doesn't mean you now have two keys that you can use to make a third. For that you need to have two different keys.

Also, if you ever need to program a PATS bypass (like for a remote starter or something) you'll run into the same issue where you need two different keys, not two keys with one being a clone.

I just dealt with this. Mind you this is for my 96. I bought a OEM Ford Stratec key off of E-bay for $12. I went to Home Depot that cut the key for free since I provided the blank. They even have a transponder programming device that I opted not to do (but you may want to do it. It's free as well). All I needed to do was put my original key in the ignition and turn it to the on position. Wait for the theft like to stop blinking and turn off. Then within 15 seconds, put the new key in the ignition and turn it to the on position. When the theft light turns off, the computer registers that key as another key that will start the car. That was it. It took me 20 seconds, $12, and a trip to Home depot.
Your situation might be different since the chip fell out, but if you can find the chip and tape it to the original key, you can reprogram a new key for cheap.
