i joined Gold's Gym today and did the '300' workout for the first time. i am so out of shape it is sad.

- 25 pull ups - i needed the assist for most of these
- 50 dead lifts (135 lbs) - i did it with 80 lbs
- 50 push ups
- 50 jumps onto a 24" high platform
- 50 floor wipers - these almost killed me
- 50 clean and presses (25 each arm, 36 lb kettle bell) - i used a 20 lb dumbbell
- 25 more pull ups - i needed the assist for all of these and could still barely finish

the idea is to do it as quickly as possible. i didn't time myself, but it must have taken me over 45 minutes.

i can barely lift my arms now.

YouTube - The 300 Workout Program

my goal is to be able to do the whole thing with the correct weight amounts and no pull up help in 30 minutes. i may never make it ...

2 things:

- the gym is free because it is $19.99 per month, and if i go 12 times a month, my insurance company gives me a $20 benefit every month
- a couple of weeks ago, i re-screened my 300 sf porch (30x10) in 95* weather. that was a real workout

That's a neat benefit from an insurance company. It's smart of them to do that.

Trying to motivate myself to start going again. I have an ankle issue I am trying to get resolved that has developed over years of wear. Sucks having your foot in a brace/support and looking at surgery on your tendons...just glad its not the cartilage or bone.

I feel like crap...:(

That workout wore me out just watching it.

I didn't like his form with the deadlifts, but othewise it looks like it would be a great all around workout. It'd be a nice variation from the usual bench press, shoulder press, squats, etc a normal workout consists of. :nice:

I fractured my left ankle on June 8th and didn't even know it until June 12th -thought I'd just sprained it and it would get better with rest & ice - got called to cover June 11th night shift lasted 3hrs on the floor - went and got it checked on June 12th - sure enough fractured! I go for assessment on June 27th for the other ankle (surgury to remove scar tissue, bone frags, cartlidge etc ) Screwing up the left ankle has made me realize that walking in pain everyday sucks! and yes the I'm in one those air cast boots and the ugly black wrap around lace up brace is in use on the right ankle! I've already had micro fracture & debridment surgury on one knee! at least it doesnt hurt everyday anymore! But the ankles are a mess! Good luck on your surgury I've put it as long as I could myself, so when I say I feel your pain - I do - every damn day!

it's been 2 days now, and i am sill really sore :(

yeah, i am going to be using more leg with mine.

in the comments for the video, he said that he was doing them like that because the idea is to do them as quickly as possible.

but i cannot imagine that the way he was doing them would be good for the back.

It has put a bad spin on the last two vacations. Went to Vegas in Feb and after walking a few hundred yards it felt like someone was hitting my ankle with a hammer...and all you do in Vegas is walk damn near. Then a month after Vegas I went on my annual snowboard trip to CO and was in tears by mid day.

I am in the ugly black wrap around lace up brace on my right ankle. My left is not nearly as bad. At first they thought fracture and/or OCD (not the mental disorder) but the x-ray and MRI showed perfect gaps, bone, and cartilage so they sent me to a joint specialist. Found my right ankle has 0 support from the muscle/cartilage standpoint. From being sprained/inflamed repeatedly over decades the tendons are loose and would need to be tightened. I just have to be re-assessed after I complete 4 physical therapy sessions (no improvement). The doctor said it should not be as harsh since the bone and cartilage are perfect/ideal. It seems that once it is the bone/cartilage it is a revolving door almost.

I feel for anyone who has to work standing or do a lot of walking, I sit in front of a computer all day. The job makes you fall out of shape real quick though but at least I work on the 3rd floor so I can at least take the steps.

never tried the 300 workout... it looks pretty tough. The soreness will definitely get less severe as you continue to workout. Good luck.

there is nothing wrong with how he does the deadlifts in that video. he doesn't go all the way to the ground which is why he doesnt use more of his legs. There are so many variations of dead lifts, just use good form and you wont have any issues.

Ehh, do something fun to get in shape. Hike the Appalachian trail, or take up kayaking or something. Looks like there should be mountain biking in your area too. Do you really see yourself just going to the gym forever? Although I suppose outdoor stuff isn't for everyone, but why go nuts when you aren't really accomplishing anything truly fulfilling? Why get ripped for the sake of being ripped? It's totally pointless and has no real payoff unless you're obsessed with the mirror. Workout to build strength to help you with some kind of sport. At least then, there's a reason for it and you might be motivated to keep going.

just to give you all an idea of how out of shape i am ...

i can only do about 6 pull ups without assistance. i am supposed to do 50 all together
the dead lifts are supposed to be done with 135 lbs, i use 90
the floor wipers are supposed to be done holding up a 135 lb barbell, i use 50
the clean and press is supposed to be done with a 35 lb barbell, i use 20

even with all those "cheats", it still takes me about 1:15 to do it, and i must sweat about a gallon.

pretty pitiful i know, but i expect that and am not discouraged, because i know that i have a long way to go.

i'm with you on that. as much as i want to get in shape a bit more, i know i couldn't just sit in a gym everyday.

we just moved to right outside of Valley Forge (washington crossing the delaware) and there are miles of paved and woods trails. i'm going to start running/hiking with the dog.

I workout a ton, it keeps me sane. Jiujitsu is by far my favorite form of cardio. You get to meet up with friends every week and try to strangle each other for an hour and a half. :p Any of y'all ever trained any martial arts? Boxing, muay thai, wrestling, etc, are all great forms of cardio.

The nice thing about starting from scratch is that you won't believe how quickly you'll see improvements being made. That initial growth spurt is always the best. It's when you plateau later on and have trouble making gains no matter how much, or hard you lift that's frustrating.
