What do you think of this 302 build?

1979 302 block bored .030 and decked by Mustang AL in Akron ohio, eagle crank balanced, hyperterctic(sp) speed pro pistons flat top, world products windsor Jr. 58 cc heads, Comp cams XE262H .493/500 and lifters, comp cams roller gold 1.6 rockers, weiand stealth intake, holley street avenger 670 carb electric choke, Hedman shorty headers ceramicoated by AFI Plain city ohio. I am running this through the stock c4 tranny and a 3.55 Posi built by McCRane Racing Kentucky. I am not sure where to go from here for more power?

Are you planning to do this or is it already executed? If still in planning, loose those heads and intake. The cam seems awful small too. What are your ultimate plans for the motor? Check out *******.com and do a ton of reading and see what other guys are doing.

This is what is currently done. I was told to go with the Iron heads to curb them from warping. This is kind of a cruiser and not really a race machine. I have been told this combo would make decent power at the wheels. There aren't many carb friendly dyno shops in the central ohio area. I am willing to get the heads ported and possibly a cam swap/intake swap...just didn't know if it would be worth the investment. An engine program put it at 420hp at the crank, but I am skeptical. I would love to have 325-350 at the wheels.

IMO that cam needs higher CR to get its full potential, you may now have 8:1 or so?
Speed pro hyp. pistons are no good, compare them to probe forged you will see the difference.

I had a set of Windsor Jr. on my last 5.0 and it's was the wrong move. The thing about the 302 is not as much compression as it is air flow. 202 valve trick flows would have been a better choice. As long as your cooling is good there should be no reason to stay away from aluminum. The jr's are alright but just a step up from stockers. Big valve aluminum heads are the way to go. Don't be as concerned with CC's. Even 64cc's with bigger valves will give you a considerable difference.

Heads and cam could be much better. The engine program sounds like it's about a 100 hp off. A set of AFR 165 or 185's or Trick Flow Twisted Wedge 170's would be FAR better. Also the shorty headers do not flow as well as full length. For exhaust I would suggest using a minimum of 2.5" mandrel bent pipes with a good see through muffler like Magnaflows.

Hi,
I'm just reading this and can speak from experience as judge by Dyno runs. I'm was running those Windsor JRs with a 600 Eddy, performer RPM, custom CI cam (sorry, heads and cam sold). My headers are TRI-Ys, but, the difference was it is a 331. My Dyno runs, was 348 RWHP. I thought this was not too shabby. Later, I added a couple TW 170 heads and better CI cam and I was up to 392 RWHP (6100 w/ 400RWTQ @ 4400). Just so you know what the possibilities are.
Good Luck!

I think the build is ok but if it were me I would do a 347 with AFR 185 heads. By the time you buy and aftermarket crank and pistons and have the necessary work done to them, you are very close to the price of a stroker. The extra cubes will help a lot!

Also, going with lighter heads will help handling and performance. You want 10:1 at least with aluminum heads, which will get you better performance as well.

But the thing I wanna know is WHY? Why are we even having to sneak around the filter like we're using profanity or posting a link to some triple-X site? No matter how my twisted mind looks at it, I see no bad combos of letters or sexual innuendos possible with those letters. Hopefully just a goofy glitch...
