Gas Cap Leak

On my 67 I installed a new reproduction twist on gas cap and related filler parts and gaskets. Last night after filling the tank, was parked in the driveway and noticed a strong fuel smell. Seems the gas was leaking out of the cap. I doubt it should be leaking like this.

Is there a way to make the seal tighter with cap I already have? Do the pop-open caps with the smaller twist cap underneath seal better? Other suggestions?

What brand gas cap did you buy? I have heard lots of bad things about Scott Drake gas caps....I don't know personally, was just researching before buying some stuff....anyway 2+2 is more than likely right....just try not to fill it all the way to the top. Also...do you have a steel divider behind your back seat? if not might be a good idea to purchase one...might help keep smells located in the trunk area and also keep you from catching on fire in case you get rear-ended :D

The cap is a Scott Drake brand. Does someone else make a good, no-leak part? Do the internal caps used in the pop-open versions seal better?

I don't have the divider plate. There are too many other factory holes in the package tray and around the rear wheel wells to also let smells in.

Get a divider plate! Just for safety if nothing else. Im not sure about any of the other stuff...i have an original pop open style and I ended up restoring it instead of getting a new one.

What mine does is when its full or close to it, it will actually slosh and spill on the bumper under hard acceleration. I too have all new filler neck and cap parts.
