t5 trans crossmember possibly causing metal knocking noise

Let me first say that there is a noise that comes only when I run over a bump on the passenger side only. It sounds like its metal to metal knocking. Its ONLY when I go over a bump no matter how big. I want to say that I'm sorry in advance but I dont know what some of the pieces are called that go to the t5 crossmember so I just put some red and blue arrows for reference. Also this is not a pic of my car, just an example.(I wish it was a pic of my car though lol)

I just recently changed out both U-Joints and the throw out bearing. I was trying to be lazy and pull the trans out with out taking off the rusty h-pipe and loosening the bolts that the blue arrows are pointing to. I then realize that there was no short cuts when it comes to pulling the trans out to get to the throw out bearing.

After I replaced the U-Joints and the throw out bearing I noticed that the red arrow bolt would not go all the way in bc the previous owner put a jack under two holes that the crossmember ends meet up with. I just tightened it as much as I could(about 80 lbs/trq). So, that makes me think that, that is what might be causing the knocking noise when I go over a bump.
However, the blue arrow bolt is loose (passenger side) because i cant get that son of a gun tightened. I have searched every where to see how to tighten that bolt but I havent found anything. On the top of that bolt there is nothing to grab it with to keep it stationary while I tighten the bottom nut. I would take the bolt out if I could and just replace it with something easier to keep stationary but I can get the nut all the way off.

a deep socket?? that's how mine tightens up, not sure why you can't. As far as the outer bolts, shim them out with washers if they have space???

I can turn the bottom nut but it seized up near the bottom of the bolt, so when I go to tighten or loosen the nut it just spins the bolt. So now I cant even put washers on the bolt if I wanted too :notnice: .I'm just going to have to stop being lazy and just take off the whole cross member and trans mount. I'll update this as soon as I finish.

buy a new mount.....
 
well I just now took off the mount to look at it and that cheap ass thing broke the metal just where the screw went. So yeah I need a new mount lol. thanks for the help. going to look at the tie rod too, to make sure thats tight

well, just finished the motor mount and making sure everything was tight. I went to look at the tie rods and the pin was still in there so I dont see why it should'nt be tight. The car is still making that noise over bumps. It sounds like hard rubber just hitting. The last person that messed with it was one of the techs that I use to work with. All he did was an alignment. Do you guys think it could be the struts? The car has about 200k on it but I bought it when it had about 160k. The car now has eibach lowering springs...

Your struts are long gone.. after you lower a car it put alot of stress on them.

Get the car up in the air and check for 12 and 6 play as well as 3 and 9.
 
HP blues will be fine for you.


Basically jack up the car and grab the tire and shake... If you hear a clunking or there is play you have a issue with your steering/suspension.

Also I noticed after the new mount was installed, there is an increased vibration when ever I rev the engine or as the rpm's increase. I have read on other threads that it could be caused by increased mount size or just because they are stiffer. I bought the one from auto zone.
