The design will last as long as the paint does. I'm assuming that's what you are asking about. I've seen wheels and such done and those take a beating from heat and elements on the road and they hold up. It's all in the quality of the paint really.

Sounds similar to a scale model decal, no?

Some what similar but you can't wet it and stick it on anything. And the film is really flimsy and sensitive to heat and humidity.
